Subepithelial cells connective tissue

Mitotic effect. STE, administered to the buccal mucosa of 15 female HMT rats, 6 months of age, weekly for 1 year, produced hyperorthokeratosis, acanthosis, numerous binucleate spinous cells, and subepithelial connective tissue hyalinization. Verrucous carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma were not seen. Karyotyping revealed that lymphocytes of tobacco-treated, as well as control rats, had normal chromosome number and morphology. However, approx 25% of buccal epithelial cells of the tobacco-treated rats were tetraploid and 5% octa-ploid, compared with only 11% tetraploid and no octaploid in the controls. Results indicated that the mitotic process could be disturbed by tobacco treatment b Molluscicidal activity. Water extract of the dried leaf, at a concentration of 168 ppm, produced equivocal effect on Lymnaea luteola . 

By studying the penetration of horseradish peroxidase across buccal mucosa, it was demonstrated that the permeation barrier is located in the upper one third to one quarter of the epithelium. After topical application, the horseradish peroxidase only permeated through the first 1-3 cell layers. However, when injected subepithelially it was found to permeate through as deep as the connective tissue and np as far as the MCGs zone. This is well correlated with the presence of the lipid-rich domain of the epithelium in its upper region. In subepithelial soft tissue and bone specimens from 19 patients in whom implants (14 stainless steel and 5 titanium) had been in situ for more than 6 months, there were scattered T lymphocyte clusters, small numbers of macrophages, and abundant expression of HLA-DR in the soft tissue adjacent to both types of implant [7T]. There were immunocompetent cells in the connective tissue lining the periphery of the screw holes and metal particles in the soft tissues and bone.
