Styrene Acrylic Copolymer

This formulation utilises a pre-emulsified monomer phase which is added continuously throughout the polymerisation. [Pg.136]

A pre-emulsion is prepared by dispersing the monomers and di-methyl-ethanolamine in colloid dissolved in water. [Pg.136]

The reaction vessel is charged with water, protective colloids and defoamer and the solution heated to 80°C. [Pg.136]

Af this temperature the ammonium persulphate (dissolved in some of the water) and ammonium hydroxide are added immediately the pre-emulsion feed to the reactor is commenced. [Pg.136]

The pre-emulsion is fed into the reaction vessel over 2 hours whilst maintaining the temperature at 80-85°C. [Pg.136]

Styrene—acrylic copolymers provide latices with good water resistance and gloss potential in both interior and exterior latex paints. However, they are typically regarded as having limited exterior durabiUty compared to all-acryhc latex emulsions that are designed for exterior use. [Pg.541]

The sulfosuccinates must be individually evaluated under varying conditions to obtain optimum results. For example, disodium laureth-5 sulfosuccinate (DLFS) is excellent for finely dispersed lattices styrene-homo- and copolymers, styrene-acrylate copolymers, acrylate-homo- and copolymers, and vinyl acetate-homo-and copolymers. DLFS is used in a concentration (related to monomer) of 3-5%. Table 19 shows possible application areas of dialkyl sulfosuccinates. [Pg.532]

Polymeric particles can be constructed from a number of different monomers or copolymer combinations. Some of the more common ones include polystyrene (traditional latex particles), poly(styrene/divinylbenzene) copolymers, poly(styrene/acrylate) copolymers, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA), poly(vinyltoluene), poly(styrene/butadiene) copolymers, and poly(styrene/vinyltoluene) copolymers. In addition, by mixing into the polymerization reaction combinations of functional monomers, one can create reactive or functional groups on the particle surface for subsequent coupling to affinity ligands. One example of this is a poly(styrene/acrylate) copolymer particle, which creates carboxylate groups within the polymer structure, the number of which is dependent on the ratio of monomers used in the polymerization process. [Pg.583]

Another polymer that has been very successful in blends with SBC is polystyrene-methyl methacrylate (SMMA), a styrene acrylic copolymer. Compared with SBC, SMMA offers significantly higher stiffness, surface hardness and temperature resistance. The refractive index of these copolymers can be... [Pg.521]

SMMA blends can also be used in extruded sheet and profile extrusion. Depending on the styrene-acrylic copolymer, its blend level and the processing conditions, the clarity of extruded parts may not be as good as the clarity of injection molded parts. [Pg.522]

The range of monomers available and copolymeiization in varying compositional blends makes the number of possible polymer variants immense. Acrylic and styrene-acrylic copolymers are the most widely used polymers in paints and other coatings. According to Lesko " acrylic polymers account for 30% of commercial emulsion polymers. Other polymers commonly used in film forming latices are polychloroprene and poly(vinyl acetate). Polystyrene-cobutadiene latices are mixed with cement and sand to form rubberized cement, as well as being used as additives in textiles and paper industries, and in the manufacture of foam rubber. [Pg.1445]

Elastomer modified styrene-acrylic copolymer, PS-PMMA, (Zylar ) display high clarity and toughness superior to clear ABS and acrylics. The material is formed by injection molding or extrusion and used in parts for blenders, food processors, diskette boxes, face shields, glasses and tool handles. [Pg.672]

Chrome plated molds are recommended when injecting elastomer modified styrene-acrylic copolymer. Runners, gates and spmes should be smooth to minimize polymer turbulence during injection. Good mold temperature is needed for optimum clarity and surface gloss. Contamination with other materials will cause streaking and haze. [Pg.711]

Styrene-acrylate copolymers are widely used as binders for interior-use paints, plasters, and exterior-use paints with a relatively high PVC. Water absorption and elasticity decrease with increasing styrene content. [Pg.126]
