Structural relaxation mechanism

Hence, the cluster model of polymers amorphous state structure allows to identify structural relaxation mechanisms in them. In the case of glassy loosely packed matrix relaxation process is realized by conformational reorganizations in this structural component (mechanism I) and in the case of its devitrification - clusters mutual motions (mechanism II). [Pg.32]

Though the accuracy of description of flow curves of real polymer melts, attained by means of Eq. (10), is not always sufficient, but doubtless the equation of such a structure based on the idea of relaxation mechanism of non-Newtonian polymer flow, correctly reflects the main peculiarities of viscous properties. Therefore while discussing the effect a filler has on the viscosity properties of polymer melts, besides the dependences Y(filler modifies the characteristic time of relaxation. According to [19], a possible form of the X versus

The progress achieved is closely linked to the development of both powerful detectors and brilliant X-ray sources (synchrotron radiation, rotating anode). Such point-focus equipment has replaced older slit-focus equipment (Kratky camera, Rigaku-Denki camera) in many laboratories, and the next step of instrumental progress is already discernible. With the X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) it will become possible to study very fast processes like the structure relaxation of elastomers after the removal of mechanical load. [Pg.7]

There is greatly renewed interest in electron solvation, due to improved laser technology. However it is apparent that a simple theoretical description such as implied by Eq. (9.15) would be inadequate. That equation assumes a continuum dielectric with a unique relaxation mechanism, such as molecular dipole rotation. There is evidence that structural effects are important, and there could be different mechanisms of relaxation operating simultaneously (Bagchi, 1989). Despite a great deal of theoretical work, there is as yet no good understanding of the evolution of free-ion yield in polar media. [Pg.314]

Apart from the relaxation mechanism described here, other mechanisms such as relaxation involving cross-correlation between dipole-dipole coupling and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) can also provide structural information [48, 49]. The expression for this relaxation rate in case of axial symmetric CSA tensors is... [Pg.364]

These data may be explained in terms of the above mechanism of the long-wavelength shift of fluorescence spectra for red-edge excitation. The properties of the environment of the tryptophan residues in the proteins studied are such that during the lifetime of the excited state, structural relaxation of the surrounding dipoles fails to proceed. Studies of the dependence of the... [Pg.101]

A method of characterising transport mechanisms in solid ionic conductors has been proposed which involves a comparison of a structural relaxation time, t, and a conductivity relaxation time, t . This differentiates between the amorphous glass electrolyte and the amorphous polymer electrolyte, the latter being a very poor conductor below the 7. A decoupling index has been defined where... [Pg.139]

Recently a very detailed study on the single chain dynamic structure factor of short chain PIB (M =3870) melts was undertaken with the aim to identify the leading effects limiting the applicability of the Rouse model toward short length scales [217]. This study was later followed by experiments on PDMS (M =6460), a polymer that has very low rotational barriers [219]. Finally, in order to access directly the intrachain relaxation mechanism experiments comparing PDMS and PIB in solution were also carried out [186]. The structural parameters for both chains were virtually identical, Rg=19.2 (21.3 A). Also their characteristic ratios C =6.73 (6.19) are very similar, i.e. the polymers have nearly equal contour length L and identical persistence lengths, thus their conformation are the same. The rotational barriers on the other hand are 3-3.5 kcal/mol for PIB and about 0.1 kcal/mol for PDMS. We first describe in some detail the study on the PIB melt compared with the PDMS melt and then discuss the results. [Pg.125]

In solution, dipole-dipole interactions constitute a relaxation mechanism, and the dipolar relaxation which is the basis for the well-known nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE), mostly used in the homonuclear H, H case. The 2D HOESY method between H and Li has been used to obtain structural information of many organolithium systems in solution and this field was reviewed in 1995. Li is commonly used as the relaxation is dominated by the dipole-dipole mechanism and the relaxation time is relatively long. Knowledge of the proximity of the lithium cation relative to protons in the substrate is used to derive information about the structure and aggregation of organolithium systems in solution. In a few cases quantitative investigations have been made °. An average error of the lithium position of ca 0.2 A was reported. [Pg.146]
