Stevin s ideas centred on statics, notions of bodies at rest - a preoccupation that has remained with us, detrimental in that it sets aside dynamic treatments. He argued from the impossibility of perpetual motion towards a concept of equilibrium. He followed a logical quasi-mathematical approach, proposing... 

Stevin s writings perpetuate some concepts with very old roots that later came to be fundamental to the mathematics of modern engineering. The manipulation of water, embankments, dams and floating barges was his main concern. In order to help himself with hydraulic pressure problems and to find the centres of gravity of complicated forms, he invented a method presaging modern calculus.
