Hydrogels using

Hydrogels used for contact lens appHcations can be classified based on the chemical stmcture of hydrophilic monomers and on the water content of the hydrogel lens. These classifications are not unique because the design of hydrogels is based on the performance desired in most cases, more than one component is used for the same or complementary purpose. In fact, some hydrophilic monomers are used in both high water and low water lenses. [Pg.104]

Transparent hydrogels useful for adhesion inhibitors, tissue adhesives, wound dressings, hemostatics and embolisation materials are obtained from dextran methacrylates via polymerisation with N-isopropylacrylamide in DMSO in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile [176]. A broad variety of new hydrogels with different sensitivities and tunable degradation behaviour is accessible by grafting L-lactide onto 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and binding this polymerisable group on dextran via activation with N,N -carbonyldiimidazole (CDI, Sect. 4.2.2) [177]. [Pg.232]

It has been found that the polymer surface having appropriately grafted nonionic, water-soluble polymer chains minimizes protein adsorption and cell adhesion. It should be noted that such minimum protein adsorption has been well known for a long time for hydrogels used for protein analysis such as polyacrylamine (PAAm) gel for electrophoresis, sephadex for protein gel filtration, and soft agar for cell culture. It is likely that the surface structure of these hydrogels resembles that of the grafted surface described above. [Pg.346]
