Salmon, steelhead trout, and a variety of marine fishes are currentiy being reared in net-pens (Fig. 5). The typical salmon net-pen is several meters on each side and may be as much as 10 m deep (1). Smaller units, called cages, are sometimes used by freshwater culturists. Cages tend to have volumes of no more than a few cubic meters. [Pg.17]

The cohoe or diver, and the chum, or dog, salmon are the choicest of the salmons for freezing. The other species, except the red, or sock eye, which is too oily and rarely frozen, are also frozen in varying quantities. Forty-four species of fish have been identified in the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River. The Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), and steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) use the river as a migration route to and from spawning areas farther upstream.
