The National Death Index (NDl), a service provided by the National Center for Health Statistics, is a central computerized index of death record information on file in the state vital statistics offices. The NDI covers deaths in the United States beginning in 1979. 

Special-situation tenn papers must provide background information with as much quantitative data as possible. Be sure that both sides of any controversy are well presented. Principal arguments and logic should be analyzed. International data can be obtained in United Nations statistical tables, from major international or domestic banks operating in that nation, and often from the commerce attache or commercial officer at the consulate.

It can be seen in Figure 78.6 that the incidence of thyroid cancer (all forms) is at the same level today as in 1971, with about 4.6 (women) and 2.0 (men). The overall thyroid cancer incidence in Sweden is somewhat higher than the incidence reported from the UK (number of cases/100000/year) 1.4 (men) and 3.7 (women), respectively (Office for National Statistics Registrations, UK, 2006) but clearly lower than that reported in the United States 4.3 (men) and 12.5 (women), respectively. In the US, an increase in incidence of about 4.8% was observed from 1992 to 2002 National Cancer Institute. The increase in thyroid cancer incidence has been postulated to be correlated with an increased iodine intake in a population. The actual uses of the decanter can be found in almost all of manufacturing industry, in process terms, and beyond it as well for utility (mainly waste treatment) uses. It is a help to see these application sectors in context, as is shown in Table 3.1. This table gives an arrangement of the main items in the totality of human economic endeavour, as exemplified by the divisions of the UK Standard Industrial Classification. (This classification is similar to those used for various purposes by the statistical offices of the United Nations, the European Union, and the US and many other governments.)... 

Spill statistics are collected by a number of agencies in Canada and the United States. In Canada, provincial offices collect data and Environment Canada maintains a database of spills. In the United States, the Coast Guard maintains a database of spills into navigable waters, while state agencies keep statistics on spills on land that are sometimes gathered into national statistics. The Minerals Management Service (MMS) in the United States maintains records of spills from offshore exploration and production activities. 

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, prescriptions for antidepressants in the United States climbed to 40 per 100 physician office visits in 2004, from 13.8 in 1995. New Zealand and the United States are the only developed countries that allow direct-to-consumer advertising of brand-name prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical companies in the United States spent 4.2 bilUon for this advertising in 2005. Today, patients must take antidepressant drugs for 4 to 6 weeks before they know whether or not the medication will work. 

To determine the industries likely to use a chemical, the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, the Organic Chemical Producers Data Base, and the National Occupational Hazard Survey may be of help. This last source represents the only comprehensive industrial exposure survey. Under its mandate in the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, NIOSH conducted a two and a half year statistically structured survey of United States workplaces to determine the levels of chemicals, trademark products, or physical agents to which workers were being exposed by job title. The Inventory of Chemicals in Commerce recently assembled by EPA s Office of Toxic Substances also contains data on chemical production by site as well as a coded production volume. EPA can also use Section 8 of TSCA to collect chemical use data, but has not done so to date. 

In January, 1997, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) replaced the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system (Executive Office 1987) in the United States.
