Starch scanning electron microscopy

Pore dimensions may have a more subtle effect on decay rate depending on component dimensions and production method of the manufactured material. Products made from pasted starch, LDPE, and EAA (2) typically appeared as laminates of starch and plastic when examined by scanning electron microscopy (Figure 1). The dimensions of inter-laminate channels (i.e., pores) were not uniform and ranged from about 50 to 325 m in cross-section (22). Since flux is dependent on diffusional path area, the smaller pores can be an impediment to movement of solutes from the interior to the surface of the films. Figure 5 illustrates two films in which the laminate units are the same thickness, but differ in length. When the starch is removed... [Pg.85]

In this study, we reported the preparation of mesoporous Ti02 materials via the sol-gel method involving a co-assembly of titanium (IV) isopropoxide and mainly neutral soluble starch CTMACl is used only for comparative reason. Ethanol and cyclohexane were used as solvents. The effect of key parameters, including surfactant removal process either by washing and/or by calcination and the solvent nature are discussed. Ti02 samples were characterized by means of N2 adsorption-desorption experiments, X-ray Diffraction analysis, UV-vis spectrophotometer. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. [Pg.378]

Scanning electron microscopy showed that numerous pin holes could be observed on the surface of starch granules when attacked by various amylases. [Pg.251]

It was also noticed that these pores penetrated into the inner layers of the granules during enzymic action and in some granules, a terraced or step-shaped appearance in their inner portions was observed. These internal characteristics are probably indicative of a layered internal structure in the granules. The other observations from scanning electron microscopy were the presence of striated structures on the surface of starch granules from banana, lily, and lotus which had been attacked by pancreatin. [Pg.251]

Our work has focused on high methoxyl pectin. In our studies we have investigated the preparation of plasticized and unplasticized pectin films, both with starch and with poly(vinyl alcohol), and characterized them using dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile measurements, scanning electron microscopy, solubility, and Fourier transfer infirared spectroscopy (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). We have also investigated the extrusion and characterization of pectin/starch blends (11). [Pg.120]
