A statistical method for plotting the relative frequency (dN/N) of a probable error in a single measured value X versus the deviation (z) from fi, the mean of the data, in units of standard deviation (o-), such that z = (x -fji)/a. The standard error curve (shown below) does not depend on either the magnitude of the mean or the standard deviation of the data set. The maximum of the normal error curve is poised at zero, indicating that the mean is the most frequently observed value. [Pg.510]

A variant of this method was described by Malvano et al. (1982) standard unit response curves are constructed with aliquots of a highly positive serum diluted with a negative sample. This approach is based on the assumption that dose-response curve parallellism eliminates the necessity to employ many different sera for the calibration curve. This positive serum is then calibrated against a WHO standard serum and the antibody content of the positive serum is expressed in international units (lU). An increase in steam pressure over design will not increase vapor handling capacity for the usual fixed capacity ejector. The increased pressure usually decreases capacity due to the extra steam in the diffuser. The best ejector steam economy is attained when the steam nozzle and diffuser are proportioned for a specified performance [8]. This is the reason it is difficult to keep so-called standard ejectors in stock and expect to have the equivalent of a custom designed unit. The throttling type ejector has a family of performance curves depending upon the motive steam pressure. This type has a lower compression ratio across the ejector than the fixed-type. The fixed-type unit is of the most concern in this presentation. [Pg.353]

Wittwer and Zollinger (1954) determined the neutralization curves of aqueous solutions of diazonium salts under standard conditions of ionic strength, etc., and found that the acidity depended on the degree of neutralization in a manner different to that expected for a dibasic acid. The curve obtained did not exhibit two steps with an intermediate region of a few pH units in which the monobasic acid is stable, as is the case, for instance, with oxalic acid (Fig. 5-1).
