For this purpose, matrix isolation experiments are typically carried out at extremely low temperatures. For example, temperatures as low as 4 K are not uncommon. Note that at these low temperatures, inert gasses such as Ar are rigid solids, and they make perfect inert matrices. The most stable protected alcohol derivatives are the methyl ethers.
