Vinyl acetate is polymerized in aqueous emulsion and used widely in surface coating and in adhesives. Copolymerized with vinyl esters of branched carboxylic acids and small quantities of acrylic acid, it gives paint latices of excellent performance characteristics. G. C. Vegter found that a coagulum-free latex of very low residual monomer content can be produced from a mixture of an anionic and a nonionic emulsifier according to a specific operating procedure. The freeze/thaw stability of polymeric latices has been investigated by H. Naidus and R. Hanzes. [Pg.9]

The data required for a kinetic formulation of the deactivation of the main reaction are probably best collected in a differential reactor. Some extrapolation to zero time is required when the reaction rate of the main reaction cannot be observed at zero coke content. The procedure can be hazardous with very fast coking, of course. Laboratory investigation revealed that sodium, which was present in the support to the extent of several tenths of 1%, had a profound effect on stability and activity of the moiybdena-alumina catalyst. Over a period of time it was possible to alter the procedure for preparing the support on successive occasions until the catalyst contained much less than 0.1% sodium oxide. The reduction in sodium content of the support was immediately reflected in improved catalyst life. Ultimately the life was extended to 9 to 12 months before replacement. Various forms of alumina have been used as a support, including alumina gel and a stabilized alumina gel. Moiybdena-alumina catalyst has been employed exclusively in the eight commercial plants previously referred to. Today the majority of refiners who operate hydroformers are using molybdena on alumina gel as a catalyst. The molybdic oxide content of the catalyst is somewhat below 10%. Although similar to the original catalyst as far as chemical composition is concerned, it possesses superior activity and life. [Pg.46]

When it is possible, assays should be performed on the same day as collection inevitably, however, some samples have to be stored for analyses at a later date, and their stabilities vary. Storage should be at 4, -20, or -40°C, and the laboratory should evaluate the stabilities of analytes under their current operating conditions (Hirata, Nomura, and Tanimoto 1979 Falk 1981 Ito et al. 1998). Samples for ionized calcium and blood gases require additional collection and storage procedures to prevent change of pH and oxygen content (Pickrell, Light, et al. 1973 Pickrell, Mauderley, et al. 1973 Szenci, Brydl, and Bajcsy 1991). [Pg.263]

The chemical combination of nickel oxide and support explains the need for high-temperature reduction of nickel oxide/kieselgulu catalysts before use and the high metal content required (see Table 3.10). A practical solution to the problem was to prereduce the catalyst at a high temperature and to stabilize the reduced nickel with air before use in industrial reactors. By the 1930s prereduction and stabihzation were becoming standard procedures for catalysts used in fat-hardening and iso-octane operations. [Pg.81]
