Stability on storage

Another type of stability required of a war gas is that it shall not undergo decomposition or polymerisation during storage. The decomposition which takes place in some substances, such as bromoacetone, hydrocyanic acid, etc., may be so inconvenient that the storage of such compounds is impossible. 

Pol5mierisation usually results in the formation of substances of little or no toxicity, as happens, for example, in the case of acrolein. 

This form of alteration has raised the problem of stabilisers, that is, substances which when added in quite small quantity, preserve the aggressive properties of the gas. For some of these gases, as acrolein, hydrocyanic acid, etc., efficient stabilisers are

The consideration that goes into these metering systems include convenience to the patients, stability on storage, compatibility with product, and ease of filling. 

Microballoons have the advantage of giving a well controlled addition of sensitiser and also improved stability on storage. Hexamine diperchlorates are strong explosives. In spite of this the compound has not come into commercial use because of its insufficient stability on storage. 

Well-defined aliphatic polyesters and dendrons based on 2,2-bis(methylol)pro-pionic acid (bis-MPA) are commercially available from the Swedish company Polymer Factory. Their stability on storage, solubility, and low toxicity make them attractive for the medical sector.

This test, which should be carried out at 90, 75 and 65 °C (149°F), may also be employed to indicate the loss of stability on storage (shelf life) of a propellant.

The presence of the ester function in the molecular structure facilitates rapid biodegradation in sewage but also threatens its chemical stability on storage in the bottle and in the rinse, where it has to work at a slightly alkaline pH. At pH 6, for instance, the molecule is completely degraded after four weeks of storage at 50°C [6], Paradoxically the hydrolytic stability is much enhanced by keeping the pH below 3.5.
