Strontium sulfide (SrS) smells like rotten eggs. It is used as a depilatory to remove hair from skin and hides. [Pg.78]

Alternatively, Sr(OH)2 is made by heating strontium carbonate or strontium sulfide with steam at temperatures around 500 to 600°C ... [Pg.887]

Calcium or strontium sulfides, doubly activated with europium-samarium or cerium-samarium, can be stimulated by IR radiation since Sm3+ acts as a trap through the transition Sm3+ + e -> Sm2+ [5.341], Emission occurs at europium or cerium and leads to orange-red (SrS Eu2 +, Sm3+) or green (CaS Ce3 +, Sm3+) luminescence. [Pg.242]

Strontium sulfate, [CAS 7759-02-6], Sr SO/. white precipitate (K p — 3.2 x 10-7), formed by reaction of strontium salt solution and H2S04 or sodium sulfate solution, insoluble in acids. On heating with carbon strontinm sulfate yields strontium sulfide, SrS, while on boiling with sodium carbonate solution, SrS04 yields strontinm carbonate. [Pg.1554]

Strontium sulfide. SrS. [CAS 1314-96-1], grayish-white solid (thermodynamic Ksp 500) reactive with water to form strontinm hydrosulfide, Sr(SH)2, solution. Strontium hydrosulfide is formed (1) by reaction of strontium sulfide and H2O, (2) by saturation of strontium hydroxide solution with H2S, Strontium polysulfides are fonued by boiling strontium hydrosulfide with sulfur,... [Pg.1554]

Rare earth element doped alkaline earth sulfides are employed in luminescence-based devices like thin film electroluminescent displays [119,120] and devices for optical data storage [121]. Strontium sulfide, SrS, thin films have been prepared by atomic layer epitaxy from [Sr(tmhd)2] (tmhd" 7) in the presence of HiS [122]. Additionally, solid sources have been employed in a comparable CVD approach [122b]. [Pg.378]

Determine the oxidation number of sulfur in each of the following substances (a) barium sulfate, BaS04, (b) sulfurous acid, H2SO3, (c) strontium sulfide, SrS, (d) hydrogen sulfide, H2S. (e) Based on these compounds what is the range of oxidation numbers seen for sulfur Is there any relationship between the range of accessible oxidation states and sulfur s position on the periodic table ... [Pg.152]

Strontium sulfide hosts. Shaver and Krongaus (1990) studied the TL of doubly activated SrS Sm,Tb. The GC was divided into two temperature regions (1) around 130 C and (2) in the 220-390°C range. The intensity ratio of the light sums in (1) and (2) was found to be of the order of 10 after Y-irradiation and only 10 after visible-light excitation. The authors discuss this effect and suggest its use for selective dosimetry in mixed fields. [Pg.273]

After mining, the raw ore is finely crushed and ground and undergoes a froth flotation ben-eficiation process to concentrate and separate celestine from byproduct minerals (e.g., barite). Then, the concentrate ore is reduced by pyrolysis in a kiln to strontium sulfide (i.e., SrS or black ash). The black ash is then dissolved in pure water, and the aqueous solution is treated with sodium carbonate to precipitate the strontium-carbonate crystals. After the strontianite crystals are removed and dried, the strontianite undergoes a calcination, evolving carbon dioxide and giving anhydrous strontium oxide (i.e., SrO, strontia). Strontium metal can be obtained either by thermal reduction of this strontium oxide with molten aluminum in a vacuum or by fused strontium chloride electrolysis. [Pg.263]

Black Ash Method, Reduction with Carbon. To enable the chemical reduction of SrSo4, celestite is mixed with powdered coal and then heated up to about 1,100°C. The chemical reaction follows the equation SrS04 + 2C SrS + 2CO2 and produces carbon dioxide and strontium sulfide. In the next process step, the strontium sulfide is dissolved in water, before carbon dioxide passes through SrS + H2O + CO2 SrCOs + H2S the solution, forming and precipitating strontium carbonate firom the solution. The by-product sulfur is recovered as elemental sulfur. [Pg.753]
