Natural gas and its combustion properties appear to have been known since early times (2). Some early temples of worship were located in areas where gas was seeping from the ground or from springs, and it is reported that Julius Caesar saw a phenomenon called the "burning spring" near Grenoble, France. Gas wells were drilled in Japan as early as 615 AD and in 900 AD the Chinese employed bamboo tubes to transport natural gas to their salt works, where the heat was used to evaporate water from salt brine. The existence of natural gas in the United States was reported by early setders who observed gas seeps and columns of fire in the Ohio Valley and the Appalachian area in 1775 (3). [Pg.167]

Copper and nickel can be alloyed with zinc to form nickel silvers. Nickel silvers are ductile, easily formed and machined, have good corrosion resistance, can be worked to provide a range of mechanical properties, and have an attractive white color. These alloys are used for ornamental purposes, as sHverplated and uncoated tableware and flatware in the electrical iadustry as contacts, connections, and springs and as many formed and machined parts (see Electrical connectors). [Pg.6]

One of the principal reasons for failure due to reaction with the service environment is the relatively complex nature of the reactions involved. Y"et, in spite of all the complex corrosion jargon, whether a metal corrodes depends on the simple elec trochemical cell set up by the environment. Demonstrations Take a strip — 0.25 mm X 1 cm X 15 cm of cold-rolled (work-hardened) brass and bend it (on edge) on the overhead until permanent deformation takes place. Anneal brass strip at bright red head for — 0.5 min to soften it. After cooling replace on overhead and show that permanent deformation takes place at a much smaller deflection than before.
