Ziac foil coated with a conductive, pressure-sensitive adhesive is used for repair of other ziac coatings or for imparting corrosion resistance at field sites. The 0.08-mm ziac tape or sheet has a 0.025-mm coaductive adhesive. The laminate is cut to size and pressed tightly to activate the adhesive. Conductive tape can be wrapped around pipe, especially around welds or connections. The corrosion resistance of this material is iatermediate between galvanized or thermally sprayed coatings and zinc-filled paints (21,50). [Pg.137]

Zinc or aluminum metal spray Sprayed metal coatings are porous and should be sealed after application by applying a sealer coat (i.e. a thin coat such as an etch primer) or a thinned version of the final coating system. Oil-based systems should not be used. Metal spray coatings can have excellent durability without overcoating with paint and, particularly for aggressive conditions it is preferable to leave them with sealer only. [Pg.134]

It is necessary to choose the type of paint with care. If it skins-over too quickly in the oven the gases cannot escape and blistering results, but if setting is deferred for too long the paint will flow to the base of the article. Some experimentation is advisable and the conditions once established should be retained. Some users treat the sprayed coating with a passivator of 200 g sodium dichromate in 1 litre of 6 7o sulphuric acid and dry it before enamelling. [Pg.429]

The corrosion rate of a bare sprayed coating is comparable to that of solid zinc or aluminium, although the greater surface area exposed may cause apparent corrosion rates to be a few per cent higher. For most uses, however, the sprayed coating is sealed or painted and achieves the much higher corrosion resistance associated with duplex coatings. The Ti02 paint was prepared by the so-called sol-gel method. Alkoxysilanes [(Ri) -Si-(OR2)4 ] were mixed with water for hydrolysis and condensation under certain conditions. Then Ti02 powder was added to the mixture and mixed well to give paint. The paint-coated films were obtained by spraying the paint to stainless steel plates. Spray coating is used before and after a product is assembled particularly if already assembled and has complex shaped and curved surfaces. Many different types of spray equipment are in use to handle the different forms of paints used. They are classified by their method of atomization (airless, air, rotary, electrostatic, etc.) and by their deposition assist (electrostatic or nonelectrostatic, flame spray, etc.). Spraying techniques may fall into several of these categories. They range from simple systems with one manual applicator to highly complex, computer-controlled, automatic systems. They can incorporate hundreds of spray units. Automatic systems may have their applicators mounted on fixed stands, on reciprocating or rotating machines, on robots, and so on. [Pg.387]

Spray nozzles are used for dust control, water aeration, dispersing a particular pattern of drops, coating, paintings, cleaning surfaces of tanks and vats, and numerous other applications. They develop a large interface between a gas and liquid, and can provide uniform round drops of liquid. Atomization occurs by a combination of gas and liquid pressure differences. The supply chain for this process can be seen in Fig. 8.11. Electrostatic spray coating or powder coating is a way of applying a dry paint to a surface. Most people have used liquid paints with a brush, a spray can, or even with their fingers. Powder coatings are dry there are no liquid solvents. The dry powder is applied to an item (substrate), then the powder is turned to liquid, usually by melting. The dry powder in its molten state can then flow out to cover the substrate, coalesce, and crosslink. The end result is a painted surface. [Pg.286]
