Spontaneous recovery

In mild cases restricted to a single symptom, spontaneous recovery may be observed. In most cases, after adequate treatment, clinical signs regress within an... [Pg.182]

Necheles et al. (N4) first reported a genetically determined homozygous GSH-Px deficiency associated with neonatal jaundice and mild hemolysis. Spontaneous recovery from hemolysis was noted 3 months after birth. Thereafter, several cases with GSH-Px deficiency were reported. Newborn infants exhibit significantly lower red blood cell GSH-Px activity and serum selenium concentrations than adult control subjects, and a significantly positive correlation between selenium concentration and GSH-Px activity has been observed. Furthermore, the addition of selenium stimulates, both in vivo and in vitro, the GSH-Px activity. The neonatal red blood cell GSH-Px deficiency may be partially due to insufficient availability of selenium during pregnancy (P9). Therefore, the diagnosis of GSH-Px deficiency in newborn infants must be made carefully. [Pg.28]

In 1995, Prescrire International, a French journal that evaluates pharmaceutical products, published a review that concluded "As homeopathic treatments are generally used in conditions with variable outcome or showing spontaneous recovery (hence their placebo responsiveness), these treatments are widely considered to have an effect in some patients. However, despite the large number of comparative trials carried out to date there is no evidence that homeopathy is any more effective fhan placebo therapy given in identical conditions." ... [Pg.529]

Shift inclusion criteria to an acute/subchronic rather than a very chronic population. But patients in the acute phase of an episode may show spontaneous recovery. [Pg.170]

A pancuronium biock can be effectiveiy antagonised with 40-50 pg-kg-1 of neostigmine provided some spontaneous recovery has taken piace before the administration of the anti-choiinesterase agent. The recovery is siow if the biock is deep. Edrophonium in doses of 0.5-1.0 mg-kg-1, aithough acting more rapidiy, is effective oniy if the biock is reiativeiy superficiai. [Pg.110]

Atracurium is a synthetic bisquaternary benzylisoquinolinium compound with a novel method of metabolism, the Hofmann elimination reaction. This reaction takes place at a pH of 7.4 and a temperature of 37°C. It is thus metabolised at body temperature and pH, and has to be stored in a refrigerator. The usual intubating dose of atracurium is 0.5-0.75 mg-kg-1 (2-3xED95). The onset of action with this dose is 2-3 minutes and intubating conditions are acceptable in 90-120 seconds. Spontaneous recovery occurs reliably from an atracurium neuromuscular block, such that an intubating dose of about 0.5 mg-kg-1 can be expected to provide surgical muscle relaxation for 25-40 minutes in the normal healthy patient. Repeated administration of atracurium leads only to a small increase in the duration of action. [Pg.114]

The block of rocuronium is reversed with neostigmine 35-50 pg-kg-1 provided some spontaneous recovery has taken place. The reversal may be slowed in the presence of agents like sevoflurane, however discontinuation of sevoflurane before neostigmine administration results in fairly prompt recovery. [Pg.115]

Although some claim that drug and alcohol addictions have high spontaneous recovery rates and short durations (for example, Hey man 1998), the preponderance of evidence is that drug and alcohol addictions are chronic, relapsing, progressive, and often fatal (Vaillant 1998) that absti-... [Pg.57]

We now understand that the material is, in this condition, soft and still coherent, but the question is, for non-cross-linked polymers above Tg as well as for vulcanized rubbers why does it show spontaneous recovery after being stretched As a model we take a chain with freely rotating links stretching of such a chain from a coiled state does not require any energy, while, after stretching, it retains its shape. [Pg.86]

This disorder shows a good prognosis, involving spontaneous recovery in most patients [4]. However, 29 (21.0%) of 138 patients required dialysis therapy owing to severe acute renal failure. No patient died in our series or in the literature consulted. [Pg.85]

An appropriate stimulation of erythropoiesis is induced by the anemia. A reticulocytosis is apparent within 5 days and is maximal at 7 to 10 days after the onset of hemolysis. Even if there is continued drug exposure, the acute hemolysis usually resolves after 1 week. This spontaneous recovery reflects replacement of the older, enzyme-deficient erythrocytes by younger red cells with sufficient G6PD activity to withstand oxidative injury. Provided there is normally functioning bone marrow, the continued loss of aging red cells is compensated by the erythropoietic marrow response. [Pg.130]

Factors that indicate a causal association between triazolam and adverse behavioral reactions include corroborating case reports and sleep laboratory studies in the literature, reports of reactions in otherwise normal persons, acute onset and temporal relationship to reactions with initial dose, spontaneous recoveries and return to normalcy with drug discontinuation, and occurrences of positive rechallenge. Also, the high benzodiazepine receptor affinity with triazolam has been postulated as a possible biological mechanism. [Pg.334]

After discontinuing the drug both made a full recovery. The authors emphasized the importance of recognizing possible abuse of such natural medications, widely perceived to be harmless despite warnings and attempted restrictions by regulatory authorities. Treatment is supportive while awaiting spontaneous recovery after drug withdrawal. [Pg.666]

Intact AChE is a basic requirement for normal function of the organism and thus for effective prophylaxis. The enzyme is changed in a way that will make it resistant to OP. This can be achieved by using reversible inhibitors (preferably carbamates), which are able to inhibit AChE reversibly, and after spontaneous recovery of the activity (decarbamylation) normal AChE serves as a source of an active enzyme. [Pg.977]

The ID50 of aerosolized EA 3580 was calculated to be 8.4 ug/kg, with 95Z confidence limits of 5.8 and 12.2 ug/kg. The time to onset of Incapacitation was about 2 h, and spontaneous recovery from severe effects required about 9 h from their Inception. The effects Induced Inhalation of aerosolized EA 3580 were the same as chose induced by Intramuscular injection of this agent. To judge by comparison of the retained IC50 for the aerosolized material and the ZD50 estimated by Crowell (267) for the Intramuscularly Injected compound, the Inhaled compound seems to have only 46.4Z of the activity of the Injected compound. [Pg.222]

Other drugs. Penicillamine causes some patients, especially those with rheumatoid arthritis, to form antibodies to the acetylcholine receptor and a syndrome indistinguishable from myasthenia gravis results. Spontaneous recovery occurs in about two-thirds of cases when penicillamine is withdrawn. Phenytoin may rarely induce or aggravate myasthenia gravis, or induce a myasthenic syndrome, possibly by depressing release of acetylcholine. Lithium may impair presynaptic neurotransmission by substituting for sodium ions in the nerve terminal. [Pg.441]
