Specimen mounting

The specimen chamber (or target chamber) may contain a number of samples and standard specimens mounted on the same sample holder. Also here are the X-ray detection system and a Faraday cup which monitors the proton current incident...

Samples of microspheres were mounted on aluminum specimen mounts by means of double-faced tapes. The microspheres were fractured with razor blades to expose the internal matrix. The samples were then coated with approximately 125 of gold by pulsing the sputter coater to avoid the possibility of artifact caused by heat generation. Secondary emissive scanning electron microscopy was performed with an Amray 1600 Turbo scanning electron microscope.

Environmental Chamber The samples were aged in an environmental exposure chamber (Tenney model BTRS) which is capable of operating and maintaining (up to several months) a hot, humid atmosphere which can be varied to 100 C while the relative humidity can be varied from 20 to 98% (for temperatures up to 85 °C). The internal dimensions of the chamber are 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 m permitting the simultaneous aging of many specimens mounted in stress rigs. 

To examine the nanowires using SEM, place a drop of nanowires suspended in water directly on an aluminum SEM specimen mount and allow the drop to dry. Taber Abrasion Resistance - The weight loss of a plastic or other material specimen after it was subjected to abrasion in a Taber abraser for a prescribed number of specimen disk rotations, usually 1000. A Taber abraser consists of an idling abrasive wheel, designated depending on the type and grit of abrasive used as CS-lOF, H 22, etc., and a rotary disk with the specimen mounted on it. The load is applied to the wheel. The produced motion simulates that of rolling with slip.
