Specific ionic liquids

In the meantime, we believe that the best prediction of the toxicity of an ionic liquid of type [cation] [anion] can be derived from the often well known toxicity data for the salts [cation]Cl and Na[anion]. Since almost all chemistry in nature takes place in aqueous media, the ions of the ionic liquid can be assumed to be present in dissociated form. Therefore, a reliable prediction of ionic liquids HSE data should be possible from a combination of the loiown effects of the alkali metal and chloride salts. Already from these, very preliminary, studies, it is clear that HSE considerations will be an important criterion in selection and exclusion of specific ionic liquid candidates for future large-scale, technical applications. [Pg.30]

The second element of general importance in the synthesis of a task-specific ionic liquid is the source of the functional group that is to be incorporated. Key to success here is the identification of a substrate containing two functional groups with different reactivities, one of which allows the attachment of the substrate to the core, and the other of which either is the functional group of interest or is modifiable to the group of interest. Functionalized alkyl halides are commonly used in this capacity, although the triflate esters of functionalized alcohols work as well. [Pg.35]

Although the first ionic liquid expressly categorized as being task-specific featured the incorporation of the function within the cation core, subsequent research has focused on the incorporation of functionality into a branch appended to the cation [11]. Using a similar protocol, Loupy and coworkers have reported the synthesis of chiral ionic liquids based on (ll ,2S)-(-)-ephedrinium salts under microwave irradiation conditions (Scheme 4.21a) [75]. Importantly, the authors were also able to demonstrate that the desired hexafluorophosphate salts could be prepared in a one-pot protocol by in situ anion-exchange metathesis (Scheme 4.21b). The second group of recently developed ionic liquids is often referred to as task specific ionic liquids in the literature [15]. These ionic liquids are designed and optimised for the best performance in high-value-added applications. Ionic liquids have also been applied in transfer hydrogenation. Ohta et al. [110] examined the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone derivatives with a formic acid-triethylamine azeotropic mixture in the ionic liquids [BMIM][PF6] and [BMIM][BF4]. These authors compared the TsDPEN-coordinated Ru(II) complexes (9, Fig. 41.11) with the ionic catalyst synthesized with the task-specific ionic liquid (10, Fig. 41.11) as ligand in the presence of [RuCl2(benzene)]2. The enantioselectivities of the catalyst immobilized by the task-specific ionic liquid 10 in [BMIM][PF6] were comparable with those of the TsDPEN-coordinated Ru(II) catalyst 9, and the loss of activities occurred one cycle later than with catalyst 9. [Pg.1410]
