The New England Document Conservation Center, or NEDCC, was founded six years ago by the New England Library Board, with the help of start-up funds from the Council on Library Resources. The purpose was to provide paper conservation services to libraries, historical organizations, and public records offices that could not afford in-house laboratories. The idea was that a shared resource could eliminate wasteful duplication of equipment and make available on a regional basis the skills of professional paper conservators. It was expected that after a start-up period, the Center would be self-supporting through fees for its services. 

In 1961, the Council on Library Resources, under the presidency of Verner W. Clapp, provided a grant for the establishment of the W. J. Barrow Research Laboratory in the Virginia Historical Society Building. This facility afforded space and equipment that were not available in the cramped quarters of the restoration shop.

Such an assignment would give the literature chemist basic instruction in literature searching and reference sources. It would familiarize him with company files and library resources, and with the individuals responsible for them. It would acquaint him with one aspect of the use of machines in documentation, particularly in relation to Ethyl data and practices. Finally, the assignment would familiarize him with and give him practice in Ethyl requirements for report writing and document duplication.

Networks of today and tomorrow are not limited anymore by the inability of LANs to cover distance and handle mobility. WANs play an important role in the future development of corporate networks worldwide. Although the primary focus of this chapter is LANs, we will feature a section on WAN connectivity. This section will briefly explain the current technologies and what you should expect to see in the future.
