Anesthetics. Tricaine is the only currendy registered anesthetic and requites a 21-day withdrawal time (9,11). The withdrawal time for MS-222 is of special concern to PDA when the broodfishes of salmon or other species are taken immediately after spawning for pet or human food. Both carbon dioxide and sodium bicarbonate [144-55-8] have also been used as anesthetics however, both chemicals are difficult to use with consistent results and involve long induction and recovery periods (9). 

Meanwhile, Pacific species Nereis japonica did not show the spawning behavior when exposed to 41. In this species, the induction of swarming behavior was controlled by 3,5-octadiene-2-one (41), which was previously detected as a major volatile constituent of the eggs in P. dumerilii87... 

Monocyclic p-lactams with appropriate amide-activating substituents possess antibacterial activity which rivals that of the traditional bicyclic penicillins and cephalosporins. The pharmaceutical potential of this discovery has spawned a high level of interest in the synthesis of these compounds. This review focusses on recent advances in the chemistry of the monocyclic P-lactams with particular attention to methods for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure azetidinones via the use of chiral starting materials or asymmetric induction. The literature from 1983 through early 1989 is discussed.

Abstract To date, European mussel culture has relied entirely on wild seed from suspended collectors or mussel beds. One problem faced by blue mussel producers is the unpredictability of seed supply, the amounts of wild seed available being extremely variable from year to year. A second problem is that recently spawned mussels cannot be sold due to insufficient meat. Hatcheries can complement wild seed supply. Hatcheries also allow triploid induction that produces non-maturing mussels. In this chapter, the different steps in hatchery production of mussel seed are described. A final section addresses future trends.
