The third major region is the northeastern Sudan. . . vast dust storms form when cold northwesterly air currents meet hot southwesterly monsoons. At such times masses of dust may be raised over large areas encompassing the region of the northeastern Sudan from the Nile River to the Red Sea. High-altitude winds often transport this dust across the Red Sea to the Arabian Peninsula. [Pg.520]

In April, before the onset of the southwest monsoon, the coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) image (Fig. 1.43) shows very low chlorophyll a concentration almost everywhere in the SCS except in the coastal zone. In the central basin, the CZCS-derived concentration is mostly below 0.1 mg/m, especially in the inner portion of the central basin (<0.05 mg/m ). In most coastal areas, the relatively high chlorophyll a concentrations may be attributed to DIN provided by river runoff. Under the summer monsoon in August, the Sea-vie wing... [Pg.61]

When large-scale circulation is concerned, the northeast monsoon will drive a basin-scale cyclonic circulation with each cyclonic g rre in the northern and southern SCS (NSCS, SSCS), respectively, and the circulation displays a double-g3Te structure. In summer, the circulation in the NSCS will still maintain a weak cyclonic gyre. However, due to the southwest monsoon, the circulation in the SSCS displays an anticyclonic g3Te. [Pg.532]

In summer (Fig. 5.3b), from May to September, under the influence of the southwest monsoon, current flow is reversed in the SCS and water enters from the Java Sea via the Karimata Straits to sweep up into the central area and exits through the Taiwan Straits. In so doing, a clockwise gyre is established off the coast of Borneo, above the Spratlys, and a smaller anticlockwise one off the coast of Vietnam. [Pg.532]

Wavelet analysis is a method for time-frequency analysis, which can obtain weak information from climate records. Wavelet transform can translation and stretch the original climate record, then transform with multiple scales to get the cycles. Qinghai Lake is located at the western side of Gaoligong Mountain in Yunnan Plateau, which mainly influenced by the Asian southwest monsoon. In this paper, we investigating the Holocene climate variance by analysis the grain-size. Total Organic Carbon content (TOC), carbonate content (CaCOj) and Magnetic susceptibility records, then use the wavelet analysis to get the Holocene climate cycles for further study the characteristics and mechanism of Asian southwest monsoon. [Pg.191]
