Wind is an important driving force in air-sea interaction processes that largely determines the extents of exchanges of heat and materials. The Indian Ocean covered in the present study experienced seasonally variable winds. During the northeast monsoon wind speeds along the eastern coastal Arabian Sea were between 0.7 and... [Pg.288]

During the NEM, when the near-surface circulation is generally counterclockwise, the SMC is replaced by the westbound northeast monsoon current (NMC). Surface currents in the northern and western Arabian Sea are weaker... [Pg.160]

From spring to faU, the intrusion water from the Pacific is narrowly confined to the continental slope south of China, only in winter, when the northeast monsoon becomes fully developed, can it spread in the southern South China Sea. The seasonal cycle over most of the SCS basin is determined predominantly by the regional dynamics within the SCS, and is forced mainly by smface wind stress curl on baroclinic Rossby waves. Furthermore, the Kmoshio also exerts a significant influence on the SCS. However, the water exchange in the Luzon Strait is very complex. [Pg.57]

When large-scale circulation is concerned, the northeast monsoon will drive a basin-scale cyclonic circulation with each cyclonic g rre in the northern and southern SCS (NSCS, SSCS), respectively, and the circulation displays a double-g3Te structure. In summer, the circulation in the NSCS will still maintain a weak cyclonic gyre. However, due to the southwest monsoon, the circulation in the SSCS displays an anticyclonic g3Te. [Pg.532]

Lindo et al. (1993) and Pilarczyk and Zeidler (1996) describe the design and construction of a series of offshore breakwaters to prevent beach erosion at Kerteh Bay along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Kerteh Bay had experienced severe coastal erosion as a result of wave attack during the annual northeast monsoon season. The erosion had become so severe that the sea had encroached to the boundary of a major... [Pg.455]
