Other multiple source units are available for analytical spectroscopy. Usually they provide from dc arc to high-voltage spark excitation conditions by using several different circuits easily selected from a control panel. All of these include circuitry to ignite an arc and timing circuits to set accurately the time interval of excitation. Many of them also include oscilloscopes to provide visual display of the excitation cycle.

To make the instrument more versatile, some spark source units have been redesigned in the past to make them interchangeable with other types of ion sources (e.g., laser ion source). The insertion of a laser ion source instead of a spark ion source allows the direct analysis of insulators without any treatment, as described by Dietze.74 75 79... 

The source unit must vaporize and excite a portion of the sample, which is generally used as one of the electrodes between which the electric discharge takes place. No single excitation source is ideally suited for all applications of emission spectrochemistry. Trace impurities in metals, alloying constituents in high concentrations, biological substances, ceramics, slags, oils, nonconductors, refractories—all may require different excitation techniques and sample preparation procedures. Table 1 summarizes the important characteristics of the commonly used spectrochemical source units.

Target/ion source units are exchanged by means of the industrial robot which was purchased in 1982. This development has been very successful, especially in its effect on doses to the personnel. Another recent improvement to the facility has been the addition of a second beam line from the underground area to the experimental area at ground floor level.

With today s R R, spectophotometers make up only a small portion of total measurement error, assuming they are diffuse spherical geometry and halogen flash-lamp source units. If you have a good spectrophotometer, then the majority of test error originates from sampling and test preparation.

Additionally, the only valid method of mapping a test chamber is with a spectroradiometer. This is the only instrument capable of showing the effect of reflections, refractions, spectral overlaps (for multiple source units), and absorptions by the materials used to construct the chamber. These effects were noted by Turner (5,6) and are the reason why many chamber manufacturers suggest that samples should not be placed too close to chamber walls. 

As shown in Figure 5, intensity refers to the ratio of flux emitted by a source to the solid angle (steradian) of emittance of that source. Units are expressed in watts per steradian (Wsr ) or lumens per steradian (Im sr =candela). Typically, beam intensity is measured with the photodetector overfilled and positioned to sample the peak output of the beam. The source to detector distance is factored out making...
