Food and herbs are main natural sources of antioxidants. In this connection, antioxidant activity (AOA) of these products is essential for planning right diet as well as for sound therapy. Screen-printed platinum sensor and potentiometric method of measuring AOA of food and herbal extracts are presented below. [Pg.1217]

This book, which incorporates materials written by some of the finest minds in pharmacy practice and education, can enable the reader to play a crucial role in improving the drug use process for patients, providers, payers, and society. The purpose of this book is to help hone your skills so you can make a real improvement in the therapies you provide to your patients. Current and future clinicians can rely on the information laid out here to enhance your knowledge and allow you to assist your patients with the sound advice that they expect you to provide. Use the text, case histories, and numerous examples detailed here to expand your therapeutic skills, and to help positively impact your patients in the years to come. [Pg.5]

Assessment for influenza and pneumococcal vaccine administration and assessment and management of other cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., smoking and antiplatelet therapy) are components of sound preventive medicine strategies. [Pg.239]

Symptoms of the acute phase are acute respiratory distress, breathing difficulty, profuse sweating, turning bluish in color, high temperature, and increased pulse and respiratory rate with chest sounds. If an x-ray is performed, mediastinal widening (swelling of lymph nodes under the breastbone) is very characteristic. Shock and death usually follow within 24 to 36 hours after the onset of respiratory distress. The fatality rate from inhalation anthrax ranges from 65 to 90% even with antibiotic therapy.3... [Pg.95]

In many therapeutic situations the drug combinations are completely misused (12). Adding another drug to a combination does not reduce the need for sound clinical judgement in therapy. Although there are many disease situations in which the use of more than one antibacterial agent may be justified, generalizations about various combinations of bactericidal or bacteriostatic antibiotics or admixtures have not proven valid. Basically, antibiotic combinations should be avoided as a common practice unless they have shown a clear increase in effectiveness as reported in the literature. [Pg.21]

Finally, in some patients, seizures tend to be exacerbated by environmental stimuli such as lights and sound. In such patients, conducting the therapy session in a busy, noisy clinic may be sufficient to precipitate a seizure, especially if the epilepsy is poorly controlled by drug therapy. Also, certain patients may have a history of increased seizure activity at certain times of the day, which may be related to when the antiepileptic drug is administered. Consequently, certain patients may benefit if the therapy session is held in a relatively quiet setting at a time when the chance of a seizure is minimal. [Pg.115]

Of course, I also received less pleasant responses, such as disregard, aggression or suggestions of referrals to a psychiatrist. Naturally, I would love it if a psychiatrist could solve my problem. A pill, some therapy, and voila, I d get my old life back That sounds truly fantastic — perhaps I ll swing by the travel agency on my way home If only this was possible. [Pg.61]

Many novel therapies could be considered high risk if only based on their uniqueness and lack of precedence. The introduction of novel therapies into the clinic has been facilitated by the cooperation between industry and regulatory scientists, and an adherence to sound scientific principles, common sense, and an approach based on flexibility. The case-by-case approach is dependent on acceptance by both regulators and industry that the interpretation of the data has to reflect best scientific practice and that no study in experimental animals can predict with certainty the outcome when a drug is given to humans [40]. [Pg.61]
