Sorting sourcing problems

If meaningful results are to be obtained from a kinetic analysis of a—time data, it is necessary to consider the possible contributions of errors arising from many sources. The following list is not comprehensive but indicates the sort of problems which are inherent in the approach. [Pg.76]

In the case of a total unknown it is a case of the more data, the better. Solving this sort of problem is like doing a jigsaw puzzle. You piece together information from a variety of sources to come up with a feasible structure. You then test that structure with more experiments to ensure you get a consistent answer. As a minimum you should consider COSY, HSQC, HMBC, 1D 13C. Don t forget-NMR is not the only technique so look at mass spectrometry (accurate mass in particular) and IR to help. [Pg.204]

Rate of Heat Transfer. Whatever the source of the heat, the principal method for its dissipation is undoubtedly conduction through the bed to the container walls, and thence, to the boiling liquid bath. Radiation, being proportional to the fourth power of the absolute temperature, is negligible. Some natural convection in the gas above the sample will occur and help to cool the top surface of the bed as well as the sides. Mass spectrometry is the classic method for ion abimdance and isotopic ratio measurements. Ions produced from atoms or moleciiles introduced into the source of a mass spectrometer are sorted according to their mass-to-charge (m/e) ratios and quantified. Since ions must be in the gas phase in order to be sorted and quantified, elements and compoimds of low volatility present special problems. Analysis of minerals requires either the use of specialized instruments or derivitization to volatile compounds. [Pg.107]
