Sorption of benzene

We have recently extended the Flory model to deal with nonpolar, two-solvent, one polymer soltulons (13). We considered sorption of benzene and cyclohexane by polybutadiene. As mentioned earlier, a binary Interaction parameter Is required for each pair of components In the solution. In this Instance, we required Interaction parameters to represent the Interactions benzene/cyclohexane, benzene/polybutadlene, and cyclohexane/ polybutadiene.

EQUILIBRIUM SORPTION VALUES. The equilibrium benzene sorption values for the extracts at the various pressures are presented in Table II. At the lower pressure, total sorption of benzene decreases with increasing size of the added alkyl group. At the higher pressure, the order is reversed. 

EXTRACT and O-METHYLATED EXTRACT. The sorption of benzene by the extract and the O-methylated extract is characterized by a rapid, initial uptake followed by a very slow approach to equilibrium. Such sorption behavior is very similar to that of glassy polymers. Thus we have chosen to interpret the sorption curves shown in Figures 2 and 3 in terms of the Berens-Hopfenberg model developed for the sorption of organic vapors into glassy polymers.(lS) By doing so, we attempt to correct the total sorption values for surface adsorption in order to calculate x parameters.

The appearance of new phases of structure ordered carbon is accompanied by the fall of Me-CF strength (Table 2) and by the development of a porosity. The sorbate volume of pores in the samples of Me-CF with THT above 800 °C, which was determined by the sorption of benzene, makes 0.13-0.16 CM3-g 1 for chlorides and 0.11-0.26 cM3 g 1 for nitrates.

For applications like the adsorption of organic pollutions, selectivity is also an important feature that an absorbent should possess.
