Some Theoretical Aspects

This section contains a very brief resume of some of the more theoretical aspects of rare-earth relaxation phenomena. Just sufficient information is included to permit analysis of the lifetime data. To delve more deeply into this fascinating and complex subject leads one rapidly into the realm of theoretical physics, which is not the point of this review. Fuller accounts and details may be obtained from the references. 

The starting point for all calculations of transition probabilities is the well-known formula (22) sometimes called the Golden Rule. It expresses the transition probability per unit time A in terms of the density of final states 

In principle, then, to calculate A, one simply must know the wave functions describing the states, the density of final states, and the nature of the perturbative Hamiltonian. In practice, however, this is an exceedingly difficult problem. 

Suppose one first considers electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole transitions. As is now well recognized, these are the major contributors to rare-earth absorption and emission spectra. We know that the electric-dipole operator transforms as a polar vector, that is, just as the coordinates (23, 24). This means that it has odd parity under an inversion operation. On the other hand, the magnetic-dipole operator transforms as an axial vector or pseudovector and of course must have even parity (23, 24). 

Now the parity of a multielectron, ionic, or atomic wave function is given by TT ( — l)/fc, where lk (the angular-momentum quantum number)

In order to answer the question of whether economic evaluation can or should play a particular part in the decisions mentioned above, carry out a two-step procedure. First, we introduce some theoretical aspects that may help to find the right approach to these issues, and then, having studied the matter from a normative viewpoint, we attempt to show how economic evaluation can contribute towards these putting solutions into practice. 

Some theoretical aspects of thiophene reactivity and structure have also been discussed, for example the kinetics of proton transfer from 2,3-dihydrobenzo[6]thiophenc-2-onc <06JOC8203>, the configuration of imines derived from thiophenecarbaldehydes <06JOC7165>, and the relative stability of benzo[c]thiophene <06T12204>. The kinetics of nucleophilic aromatic substitution of some 2-substituted-5-nitrothiophenes in room temperature ionic liquids have also been investigated <06JOC5144>. 

We now briefly review some theoretical aspects of transmission ED using high-energy electrons based on an electron wave mechanical formulation of the dynamical theory of contrast. 

In this chapter, we discuss how to perform meaningful tribological simulations by avoiding the potential pitfalls that were mentioned above. In the next section, some theoretical aspects of friction between solids will be explained. Then an overview of algorithms that have been used in the simulation of tribological phenomena is provided. Selected case studies will be presented in the last section. 

This paper may be regarded as a sequel to my second book on Cationic Polymerisation [1]. I have aimed here at providing a fairly detailed discussion of some theoretical aspects of the subject which is still (or perhaps now more than ever before) in Dainton s words rudis indigestaque moles (a crude and ill-digested, i.e., confused, mass) [2], I also intend to discuss specifically some of the problems raised by Mayo and Morton in their article Ionic Polymerization in the book Unsolved Problems in Polymer Science [3].

As first described in Section 1.4.2, there are a number of ways of further classifying fiber-matrix composites, such as according to the fiber and matrix type—for example, glass-fiber-reinforced polymer composites (GFRP) or by fiber orientation. In this section, we utilize all of these combinations to describe the mechanical properties of some important fiber-reinforced composites. Again, not all possible combinations are covered, but the principles involved are applicable to most fiber-reinforced composites. We begin with some theoretical aspects of strength and modulus in composites.
