Most xanthene dyes are classified as basic dyes by their method of appHcation acid dyes can be produced by introduction of sulfonic acid groups. The fluoresceins, which contain carboxy and hydroxy substituents, are also acid dyes for coloration of silk. Some of the fluoresceins in which the carboxy group has been esterified, are soluble in alcohol or other organic solvents and can be classified as solvent dyes. Mordant dyes can be produced by introducing o-dihydroxy or sahcyhc acid groups (2), which when metallised can have very good lightfastness. [Pg.399]

The free maleic acid content in maleic anhydride is determined by direct potentiometric titration (166). The procedure involves the use of a tertiary amine, A/-ethylpipetidine [766-09-6J, as a titrant. A tertiary amine is chosen as a titrant since it is nonreactive with anhydrides (166,167). The titration is conducted in an anhydrous solvent system. Only one of the carboxyhc acid groups is titrated by this procedure. The second hydrogen s dissociation constant is too weak to titrate (166). This test method is not only used to determine the latent acid content in refined maleic acid, but also as a measure of the sample exposure to moisture during shipping. [Pg.459]

Polyethers. Antibiotics within this family contain a number of cycHc ether and ketal units and have a carboxyHc acid group. They form complexes with mono- and divalent cations that ate soluble ia aoapolar organic solvents. They iateract with bacterial cell membranes and allow cations to pass through the membranes causiag cell death. Because of this property they have been classified as ionophores. Monensia, lasalocid, and maduramicia are examples of polyethers that are used commercially as anticoccidial agents ia poultry and as growth promotants ia mmiaants. [Pg.474]

Dyes, Dye Intermediates, and Naphthalene. Several thousand different synthetic dyes are known, having a total worldwide consumption of 298 million kg/yr (see Dyes AND dye intermediates). Many dyes contain some form of sulfonate as —SO H, —SO Na, or —SO2NH2. Acid dyes, solvent dyes, basic dyes, disperse dyes, fiber-reactive dyes, and vat dyes can have one or more sulfonic acid groups incorporated into their molecular stmcture. The raw materials used for the manufacture of dyes are mainly aromatic hydrocarbons (67—74) and include ben2ene, toluene, naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene, phenol (qv), pyridine, and carba2ole. Anthraquinone sulfonic acid is an important dye intermediate and is prepared by sulfonation of anthraquinone using sulfur trioxide and sulfuric acid. [Pg.79]

A water-reducible coating or resin is one that is diluted with water before use. Water-reducible alkyds give comparable drying performance to solvent-bome alkyds. However, they are not widely used because film properties tend to be poorer than those of solvent-bome alkyds, especially in air-dry systems (26). This is pardy because of alcoholysis of the alkyd by primary alcohols such as 1-butanol [71-36-3] C H qO, a common solvent in water-reducible alkyds (27,28) secondary alcohols such as 2-butanol [78-92-2] C qH O, minimize this problem (27). In any case, the slow loss of amine or ammonia leads to short-term high sensitivity to water. Even in the fully dry films, the presence of unreacted carboxyHc acid groups leads to films having comparatively poor water resistance limiting their usehilness. [Pg.336]
