Solvent machine

Eventually, irregularities will occur. Chemical manufacturing processes are a complex interaction of reagents, solvents, machines, and people. Machines can break down and people can make mistakes. A cosolvent (or co-solvent) machine or process is one which uses more than a single solvent. 

This author believes that any user contemplating the purchase of a cosolvent or mono-solvent machine intended to use flammable solvents should insist that the purchased machine be approved by FM. 

The De Danske Sukkerfabriker (DDS) diffuser extractor (Fig. 6) is a relatively simple version of this family of machines, employing a double screw rotating in a vessel mounted at about 10° to the horizontal. The double screw is used to transport the soHds up the gradient of the sheU, while solvent flows down the gradient. Equipment using a single screw in a horizontal sheU for countercurrent extraction of soHds under pressure has been described (19). 

Following each use the impingement mixing chamber is cleared by advancing a piston that eliminates the need for solvent flushing as is required for low pressure machines.

Metal Preparation. Preparation of the metal surfaces to be bonded usually is required because most metals contain surface imperfections or contaminants that undesirably affect bond properties. The cladding faces usually are surface ground, using an abrasive machine, and then are degreased with a solvent to ensure consistent bond strength (26). In general, a surface finish that is >3.8 fim deep is needed to produce consistent, high quaUty bonds. 

Solvent Gleaning. Solvent cleaning employs the natural solubilizing properties of various nonaqueous solvents or blends of solvents. Either 100% solvents or aqueous emulsions of solvents can be used. AppHcation is typically by immersion, hand appHcation, or via a vapor degreaser machine. 

Low molecular cationic polymers or alum can also be used to flocculate pitch, ie, bind up the pitch so that it is retained in the sheet, to minimize pitch deposition on machine surfaces and fabrics (35,36). Alum is used commonly in newsprint operations (34). The addition of a nonionic surfactant with a hydrocarbon solvent to the wet end has shown some utility in preventing deposits of adhesive recycled furnish contaminants from forming on the paper... 

Cleaning Supercritical fluids such as CO9 are being used to clean and degrease quartz rods used to produce optical fibers, produc ts used in the fabrication of printed circuit boards, oily chips from machining operations, and precision bearings in militaiy applications, and so on. Here, CO9 replaces convention chlorocarbon or chlorofluorocarbon solvents.

Because of the lack of solubility in the usual solvents, aniline-formaldehyde laminates are made by a pre-mix method. In this process the aniline hydrochloride-formaldehyde product is run into a bath of paper pulp rather than of caustic soda. Soda is then added to precipitate the resin on to the paper fibres. The pulp is then passed through a paper-making machine to give a paper with a 50% resin content. 

The other problem that can occur with metals is the presence of various machine oils on the surface, such as might be used in the automotive area.
