Machining oils

Lubricating oils are also used in industrial and process appHcations such as hydrauhc and turbine oils, machine oil and grease, marine and railroad diesel, and metalworking oils. Process oils are used in the manufacture of mbber, textiles, leather, and electrical goods. The distribution of lube oils used in these apphcations in 1992 is as follows automotive, 45711 industrial, 2229 t and process, 1070 t (- SIS, 000 gal) (11). 

The other problem that can occur with metals is the presence of various machine oils on the surface, such as might be used in the automotive area. Mechanical properties of hydrogenated titanium alloys are strongly dependent on the applied stress tensor, especially on its hydrostatic component. This was illustrated by the high-pressure tensile and extrusion tests on the Ti-6Al-2.5Mo-2Cr alloy and the same alloy hydrogenated to a = 0.15 wt.%H. Tests were carried out using the apparatus at the Institute of Metal Physics UD RAS operating at hydrostatic pressures of machine oil to 15 kbax and temperatures to 250°C.

Depending on the properties of the specific agent, unmodified G-series agents are classified as either nonpersistent or moderately persistent by the military. Evaporation rates range from near that of water down to that of light machine oil. 

For military purposes, unmodified vesicants are classified as persistent. Under proper conditions, agents can remain hazardous in soil and even in water for several years. Ba azide has not been used as an expl, bur it has been used in the manuf of fluorescent lamps and radio tubes (Ref 12a 19)- It has also found use as a blowing agent during the vulcanization of cellular rubber (Ref 22). Another example of using ultrafiltration for wastewater treatment and resource recovery is the separation of oil-water emulsions generated from metal machining, oil field wastes, and enhanced oil recovery effluents. Hydrophilic membranes such as cellulose acetate are preferred because they are effective barriers to oil droplets and are less prone to fouling. The UF permeate readily meets direct discharge standards. The oil-rich stream can be processed to reclaim the oil, or disposed at reduced transportation cost because of its reduced volume.

Taylor et al. conducted LEIS in a mapping mode to characterize the spatial variation in the admittance associated with various types of intentionally formed defects on organically coated metal surfaces (135). The most common metal swarfs are iron-based [9,10] and produced by the machine tool and automobile industries. The resulting fine Fe particles oxidize in storage and form magnetite and hematite. Because they also contain flammable machine oils, this oxidation makes them pyrophoric and hence a liability. Because the particle surfaces are coated with oil, they cannot be incorporated in conventional cement. As demonstrated by Wagh and Jeong [3], the acid phosphate in the CBPC process acts like a detergent and exposes the surface of these particles to the acid-base reaction and binds them. 

Lubricants and Coatings. Most of the lubrication problems encountered in the laboratory can be solved with SAE 10 or SAE 20 machine oil, except for ball bearings subject to heavy loads, for which cup grease should be used.
