Adam M.-P. Pederson, who grew up in Minneapolis, MN, in the USA, received his B.S. (2000) from the University of Minnesota s Institute of Technology. From 2000 to 2003, he worked as a membrane chemist at Osmonics (later GE Osmonics) in the area of water purification and solvent-based separations. He is currently a chemistry graduate student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University under Harry W. Gibson in the field of supramolecular polymer synthesis. [Pg.1086]

Solvent-based separation through extractive distillation consists of two distillations. The first is an extraction column with two feed (Aspen Distill was used designing this column), while the second is a simple distillation column (the driving force concept was used for designing this column). The design was then verified by rigorous simulation using Aspen Plus . The residue curve map (see Fig. 3) was used... [Pg.124]

The section on Solvent-Based Separations is based in part on a paper present at the Regional Technical Meeting on Plastic Waste Management sponsor by the Society of Plastics Engineers, Oct. 17-18, 1990. The authors wish to thank Dow and Goodyear for polymer samples. Also, L. M. Vane thanks the Plastics Institute of America for a supplemental fellowship, and the National Science Foundation and EHiPont for stipend support. [Pg.112]

Processing steps which act by chemical separation The undesirable chemical compounds (e.g., polyaromatics) are removed using solvent-based separation methods (solvent refining). The by-products (extracts) represent a yield loss in producing the base stock. The base stock properties are determined by molecules originally in the crude, since molecules in the final base stock are unchanged from those in the feed or... [Pg.4]

It is likely that solvent-based processing of recovered plastics will grow in the future as part of the overall global infrastructure for plastics recovery. Economies of scale will help to cover the overhead costs required to meet demanding environmental and safety requirements for chemical processing. Some advantages and disadvantages of solvent-based separation processed are summarized here ... [Pg.609]

Solvent based processes can be used to separate plastics into different generic type groups, to separate plastics from non - plastic materials or even to remove fillers which have been incorporated in plastic. The solvent base separation processes are based on... [Pg.323]

Lynch et al. [18] describes preliminary experiments with a solvent based separation process. Tetrahydrofuran (THE) was used as a solvent to separate mixture consisting of PVC, PP, LDPE, HOPE and PET. Materials were removed as follows... [Pg.323]

Another example of the solvent based separation process is the process described by Hafner [19]. The process is meant to separate PVC from non-vinyl components such as fabric ( for example in vinyl upholstery ) or paper (such as in vinyl wallpaper ). PVC is dissolved in a solvent, solution is separated from the non - soluble components by filtration and then the polymer is precipitated by addition of a non -solvent. Solvent, non - solvent and plasticizers are recovered by fractional distillation. [Pg.324]
