A plethora of lactase-treated products are described in the literature (Zadow 1984 Holsinger 1978). The use of hydrolyzed lactose syrups has been proposed as an alternative sweetener to corn syrup solids. Storage of syrups as concentrated liquids can be a problem due to microorganism growth or to extensive precipitation of residual lactose or galactose. Generally, both problems can be controlled by storage at -10 to -20°C if syrup total solids were around 70%. Guy (1979) has reported on the sweetness of hydrolyzed, demineralized syrups.

Until now most solid storage systems have been on a laboratory scale only. Apart from the weight and volume of the storage systems, topics of research are the conditions of charging and discharging the system (pressure, temperature, heat transfer, time), the potential number of charging cycles (lifetime) and of course costs.

Retrofit. Use of adipic acid in an existing lime or limestone system does not require modification of process flow configuration or absorber design therefore, it is particularly suited for retrofit applications. The fact that it may be added at any point in the slurry circuit provides a greater flexibility in the location and installation of a simple solids storage and feed system, a minimal capital investment. 

There are two additional considerations that we raise here as areas of potential concern, which are beyond the scope of this overview as they are related to the specific characteristics of the solid storage media. However, it is important to raise awareness of these issues. The first consideration is stress in the containment material induced by expansion of the solid storage media during absorption or desorption of hydrogen. Such stresses can, in principle, be quite large and should be considered in addition to the stress associated with the gas pressure. The second consideration is potential chemical...
