The movement and storage of solids is usually more expensive than the movement of liquids and gases, which can be easily pumped down a pipeline. The best equipment to use will depend on a number of factors ... 

The storage of solid or liquid toxic waste residues must be considered in the design of the laboratory complex. Whatever temporary storage is selected, such as berms, sheds, etc., it is imperative that a leaking drum not result in chemicals being discharged toward the aquifer. Wastes must not be stored on site for more than 90 days after collection, so the laboratory storage... 

Containers for conventional wastes. The types and capacities of containers now commonly used for on-site storage of solid wastes are summarized in Table 22-62. The small containers are used in individual offices and workstations. The medium-size and large containers are used at locations where large volumes are generated. 

Similar situation characterizes MVs of the Murmansk Shipping Company (MSC). To date the MSC has 5 MVs used in SNF-reloading operations and storage of Solid and Liquid Radioactive Waste (SRW and LRW).

The primary function of a continuous thickener is to concentrate suspended solids by gravity settling so that a steady-state material balance is achieved, solids being withdrawn continuously in the underflow at the rate they are supplied in the feed. Normally, an inventory of pulp is maintained in order to achieve the desired concentration. This volume will vary somewhat as operating conditions change on occasion, this inventory can be used for storage of solids when teed and underflow rates are reduced or temporarily suspended. 

Consequently, a temperature profile develops within the mass which is mainly determined by the substance specific heat conductivity. The temperature profiles of those two limiting cases are presented schematically in Figure 4-7, As the Semenov model is of greater importance to chemical transitions performed in their respective reactors, the following elaboration shall focus on this part of the explosion theory. The other limiting case should be applied when assessing the storage of solid substances with dust explosive or self-reactive properties. 

Scale-up is also difficult [Bermingham 2000]. Because solids are handled, the minimum size of test apparatus is more strongly limited than in the case of, for example, distillation. The minimum size for evaporative and cooling crystallizers is about 5 L. Process steps in which solids are produced must be very carefully designed as they directly influence downstream steps such as filtration, drying, storage of solids, and compaction. If possible, tests in a miniplant in which the total process is mirrored should be supplemented by individual tests in a larger semitechnical plant.
