Similarly, the various EU directives that mandate substance bans have initiated wide scale research and development of alternative materials. Lead is a case in point. Lead has been widely used in the electronic industry in solders. Lead-free solders have existed for many years but it was the mandate in the Restriction of use of certain Flazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) to have products free of lead by July 2006 that spurred industry research, planning and adoption of the substitutes. Annex I lists examples of Green Chemistry case studies where research was stimulated in response to legislation targeting hazardous materials. [Pg.10]

To date, the single most important commercial use of lead is in the manufacture of lead-acid storage batteries. However, for most of the twentieth century, the most important environmental source of Pb was gasoline combnstion. It is also used in alloys, such as fusible metals, antifriction metals, and solder. Lead foil is made with lead alloys. Lead is used for covering cables and as a lining for laboratory sinks, tanks, and the chambers in the lead-chamber process for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. It is used extensively in plumbing. Because it has excellent vibration-dampening characteristics, lead is often used to support heavy machinery. [Pg.65]

PMS liquids are corrosion-inert substances. Under normal conditions and heated to 100-150 °C they do not cause corrosion and for a long period of time do not change in airflow when in contact with aluminum and magnesium alloys, bronzes, carbon and doped steels, as well as titanium alloys. PMS liquids do not change their properties under 100 °C in air for 200 hours in contact with the above-listed alloys as well as with beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, Invar alloy, brass, copper, mel-chior, solder, lead, silver. The stability of the properties of PMS liquids in these conditions is usually accompanied by the absence of metal and alloy corrosion, although the colour of the metal surface may slightly change. [Pg.167]

Corrosion of Lead Pipes and Solders Lead is generally not present in domestic water supplies such as rivers and lakes. The lead content of drinking water is generally below detection limits however, lead can enter water because of the corrosion or wear of brass fixtures, lead pipes, or solders. By far the largest number of resistors are fixed resistors. Traditional fixed resistors usually are cylindrical with solderable leads. Here several groups may be distinguished. [Pg.152]

Tin is normally a metal (called white tin) but does undergo a low-temperature conversion to a nonmetallic form (called gray tin). Tin is obtained by reduction of cassiterite, a mineral form of Sn02. Tin is used to make tin plate, bronze, and solder. Lead is obtained from galena, which is a sulfide ore, PbS. More than half of the lead produced is used to make electrodes for lead storage batteries. Litharge, or lead(II) oxide, is an important lead compound from which other lead compounds are prepared. [Pg.949]

Solderability Lead-free solder does not wet as well to solderable surfaces as leaded solder does, so pad size, solder quantity, and flux type and quantity must be taken into account. [Pg.1178]

X-ray features of lead-free solder for area array plastic package balls are similar to features of tin-lead-based solder. Lead-free solders have similar density to tin-lead and, like lead, impede x-rays. Therefore, with some calibration, x-ray results can be interpreted for lead-free solder. X-ray systems need to be further developed, how-... [Pg.246]
