To support decision making in supply chains, advanced planning systems (APS) have been developed and successfully applied in industry by several software vendors. Most of these systems rely on some kind of decomposition of planning tasks into software modules as shown in Figures 11.1 and 11.2. 

Despite the fact that production planning is embedded into a control loop, basic attitudes differ on how to solve production planning tasks. 

Based on a project (or logistics) class description of the electronic data management system, and the library of technical components it is possible to simulate any system in connection with the planning tasks. Figure 5 shows the integration scheme of different simulation systems for the planning aspects.

Table 3 summarizes the resirlts of the cognitive emeilysis for the planning task. Experienced operators must take a number of constraints into account when deciding upon the most suitable strategy to manufacture the part. These include ... 

Providing valuable input to cognitive analysis was a series of structured interviews with managers from 60 smhil- to medium-sized enterprises in order to collect taxonomic data about typical planning tasks in various enterprises, environmental and internal factors, and personality characteristics. In other words, the aim of these interviews was to identify the different situations in which managerial planning takes place. 

The field of engineering, apart from planning tasks, above aU handles complex contents of engineering and the natural sciences, which wiU be discussed in the global engineering network on the basis of CSCW in the future. UnUke planning tasks, engineering and the natural sciences can in memy cases not be discussed exclusively on the basis of numerical values or texts. Frequently they involve complex, multidimensional problem scopes. Therefore, a discussion of these subjects is supported by a spatial, multidimensional representation of the contents.
