The optimization of value-added processes is a subject that scientists all over the world have been dealing with for more than 70 years. The first basic algorithms for so-called Linear Programming (LP) were developed at American and European universities already in the 1930s, for the first time allowing the planning and simulation of simple business processes. The detailed tasks for Fault Management and Network Expansion are now rewritten to use these tools (see Figure 7.12). The old network expansion tasks are replaced by new procedures, but both the old and the new achieve the same high-level aims the new tools provide a new refinement in which portions of the high-level tasks are performed by software tools. This is a good case for separating the detailed and abstract views of the business. We can then easily deal with the different realizations of the business processes, including those that involve software. 

IS refers to the software packages and databases that provide the functionality to implement the business processes. These include such packages as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) and Maintenance Management Systems. 

This chapter presented an overview of ERP from the outside and from the inside. The outside view clarified the connection between ERP, electronic commerce, and supply chain management. The inside view describe the functional and implementation elements of ERP systems, particularly in the context of manufacturing enterprises, and identified the points at which ERP interacts wifli other software applications in manufacturing enterprises. Finally, we looked at open research problems surrounding ERP and identified those that are important to fitting ERP systems into current and future business processes. 

As with MRP and MRPII, there is no universal set of ERP functions. However, the fundamental characteristics of current ERP systems are i) it is packaged software which integrates the majority of a business processes, ii) it uses a data warehouse that allows real time access, and iii) it processes many of the firm s transactions and integrates them with planning.
