Soft chemical composition

The process of burning out the impurities is slowest in the open-hearth furnace. This implies there is plenty of time to analyze the melt and add whatever is needed to obtain the desired chemical composition. Manganese, vanadium, and chromium are frequent additives. The properties of the finished steel depend upon the amount of carbon left in and upon the identity and the quantity of other added elements. Soft steel, for example, contains 0.08-0.18 weight percent carbon structural steel, 0.15-0.25% hard steel ox toot steel, 1-1.2%. [Pg.404]

Intermolecular forces are responsible for the existence of several different phases of matter. A phase is a form of matter that is uniform throughout in both chemical composition and physical state. The phases of matter include the three common physical states, solid, liquid, and gas (or vapor), introduced in Section A. Many substances have more than one solid phase, with different arrangements of their atoms or molecules. For instance, carbon has several solid phases one is the hard, brilliantly transparent diamond we value and treasure and another is the soft, slippery, black graphite we use in common pencil lead. A condensed phase means simply a solid or liquid phase. The temperature at which a gas condenses to a liquid or a solid depends on the strength of the attractive forces between its molecules. [Pg.300]

This difference in spatial characteristics has a profound effect upon the polymer s physical and chemical properties. In thermoplastic polymers, application of heat causes a change from a solid or glassy (amorphous) state to a flowable liquid. In thermosetting polymers, the change of state occurs from a rigid solid to a soft, rubbery composition. The glass transition temperature, Tg, ... [Pg.404]

Direct solid-state polymer/additive mass analysis has involved various ionisation modes El (Section 6.2.1), Cl (Section 6.2.2), DCI (Section 6.2.2.1), FAB (Section 6.2.4), FI (Section 6.2.5), FD (Section 6.2.6) and LD. Survey mass spectra obtained with soft ionisation methods (FI-MS, CI-MS) provide diagnostic overviews of chemical composition. The supplemental tandem (MS/MS) and atomic composition (AC-MS) techniques are used to make specific identifications of various organic ingredients. Direct analysis of polymer systems for more than a few thousand daltons has only just begun. Ionisation methods employed are FD, ESI and MALDI. Solid-probe ToF-MS (or DI-HRMS) is a breakthrough [188]. [Pg.412]

Block copolymers of polystyrene with rubbery polymers are made by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an unsaturated rubber such as 1,4 polybutadiene or polystyrene co-butadiene. Some of the growing polystyrene chains incorporate vinyl groups from the rubbers to create block copolymers of the type shown in Fig. 21.4. The combination of incompatible hard polystyrene blocks and soft rubber blocks creates a material in which the different molecular blocks segregate into discrete phases. The chemical composition and lengths of the block controls the phase morphology. When polystyrene dominates, the rubber particles form... [Pg.329]

Most everyone is familiar with the contrasting resilient, pliable nature of soft contact lenses and the brittle character of hard lenses. Both lenses are constructed from polymers, but the differing chemical composition of each polymer leads to considerably different physical properties. [Pg.221]

The complexity of the mixtures made it impossible to define the chemical composition so the commercial preparations were divided into four groups (Table 8.2) on the basis of a series of sophisticated chemical assay procedures. Caramel colorants must be compatible with the food products in which they are used, which usually means the absence of flocculation and precipitation in the food. These undesirable effects result from charged macromolecular components of caramel which react with the food. Hence the net ionic charge of the caramel macromolecules at the pH of the intended food product is the prime determinant of compatibility. Caramel colorants are used in a variety of foods (Table 8.2) but over 80% of the caramel produced in the US is used to color soft drinks particularly colas and root beers. [Pg.199]

Do assassin bugs really collect damar for its chemicals The resin serves their needs because it does not harden quickly but remains soft and sticky. Softness and stickiness are physical properties, but they are also direct consequences of the resin s chemical composition. It seems fair to credit the bugs employment of damar to its complex mix of chemicals. We could also ask whether green lacewing larvae appropriate aphid wool for its chemicals. In that case, the significance of chemical properties appears unequivocal, as the ants chemical sense evidently equates the waxy wool with aphids. [Pg.113]

Hinckley believes the differences between the two types of clays is largely a function of the environment of deposition and post-depositional leaching. The poorly crystallized hard clays were believed to have been deposited in a marine environment where face to face flocculation occurred. The well-crystallized soft clays were presumably flocculated edge to face in a fresh-water environment. The more porous soft clays were more thoroughly leached and re-crystallized than the less porous hard clays. Like other kaolinite studies this one does not provide any specific information about the actual chemical composition of the kaolinite minerals. [Pg.141]

A famous case of poisoning occurred in the orange-growing region of Florida (1988, soft drink tampering). The analysis of 5.000 g suspected toxin revealed the chemical composition of 4.049 g thallium, 0.318 g sulfur, and 0.639 g oxygen. Provide the chemical formula and name. [Pg.39]

It is not straightforward to examine the effect of the local magnetocrystalline anisotropy K on the averaged random magnetocrystalline anisotropy in experiment. This is because alteration of K requires a modification of chemical compositions which concurrently alters other influential parameters. Such concurrent alterations overshadow the effect of K on in experiment. This has made an explicit discussion on the scaling property of K in soft magnetic nanostructures challenging. [Pg.381]

Each carbonized material is characterized by the size and distribution of the pores. We have found it convenient to distinguish between large pores (> 2000 A) and smaller ones with sizes down to 50 A. Furthermore, the pore size depends on the chemical composition of the material. The smallest pores are due to the crosslinking effects of some heteroatoms (such as oxygen and sulfur) or to the effect of defects such as tetrahedral bonds, etc., which reduce BSU mobility during the soft stage. As the... [Pg.97]

The stress-strain behavior of heterogeneous block copolymers depends on their chemical composition. Those consisting of a soft rubbery component and a hard glassy component may either be rubberlike or... [Pg.195]
