Sodium, 53 zinc

The larger cations of Group 1 (K, Rb, Cs) can be precipitated from aqueous solution as white solids by addition of the reagent sodium tetraphenylborate, NaB(C( H5)4. Sodium can be precipitated as the yellow sodium zinc uranium oxide ethanoate (sodium zinc uranyl acetate). NaZn(U02)3(CH3C00)y. 9H2O. by adding a clear solution of zinc uranyl acetate in dilute ethanoic acid to a solution of a sodium salt. [Pg.136]

The metal is slowly oxidised by air at its boiling point, to give red mercury(II) oxide it is attacked by the halogens (which cannoi therefore be collected over mercury) and by nitric acid. (The reactivity of mercury towards acids is further considered on pp. 436, 438.) It forms amalgams—liquid or solid—with many other metals these find uses as reducing agents (for example with sodium, zinc) and as dental fillings (for example with silver, tin or copper). [Pg.435]

In the hydraulic transport of solids through steel pipelines, inhibitors of the sodium-zinc-phosphate glass type have been shown" to be effective. In the case of coal slurries the polyphosphate type was rejected because the de-oxygenating action of the coal lowered the inhibitor effectiveness. Hexavalent chromium compounds at 20 p.p.m. were more effective". ... [Pg.797]

Sodium-zinc alloys for phase diagram determination are prepared by melting the elements in glass tubes under H2- Samples of NaZujj are prepared by heating zinc for several hours above the melting point of NaZn,3 (557°C) with xs Na in alundum extraction thimbles with N2 or Ar in a steel bomb scaled with copper gaskets. Excess Na was removed by extraction with liq NHj. Both KZn,3 and KCd,2 were prepared in this manner. ... [Pg.430]

The direct reaction of zinc metal with organic iodides dates back to the work of Frankland(67). Several modifications have been suggested since that time to increase the reactivity of the metal. The majority of these modifications have employed zinc-copper couples(68-72), sodium-zinc alloys(73), or zinc-silver couples(77). Some recent work has indicated that certain zinc-copper couples will react with alkyl bromides to give modest yields of dialkylzinc compounds(74,73). However, all attempts to react zinc with aryl iodides or bromides have met with failure. The primary use of zinc couples has been in the Simmons-Smith reaction. This reaction has been primarily used with diiodomethane as 1,1-dibromides or longer chain diiodides have proven to be too unneactive even with the most reactive zinc couples. [Pg.235]

EMA ionomers (see Figure 4.30) are speciality thermoplastics copolymerized from ethylene and a small fraction of methacrylic acid, which is then transformed into the salt of sodium, zinc, lithium or another metal randomly distributed along the backbone. The backbone is identical to that of the polyolefins but the pendant groups are different, with a polar and ionic character. [Pg.299]

Zinc. Next to sodium, zinc is the most used reductant. It is available in powder, dust, and granular (mossy) forms. Zinc gets coated by a l er of zinc oxide which must be removed to activate it before it can reduce effectively. It can easily be activated by shaking 3 to 4 min. in a 1% to 2% hydrochloric acid solution. This means for every 98 ml of water volume, add 2 ml of coned hydrochloric acid. Then wash this solution with water, ethatiol, acetone, and ether. Ot activation can be accomplished by washing zinc in a solution of anhydrous zinc chloride (a very small amount) in ether, alcohol, or tetrahydrofuran. Another way is to stir 180 g of zinc in a solution of 1 g copper sulfate pentahydrate. Personally, I like the HCl acid method. [Pg.30]
