Duane holds more than 65 patents and has published more than 100 technical papers outside of Dow. He is an adjunct professor at Central Michigan University and at Michigan Technological University. In 2001, Duane was named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Dow s Polystyrene Business. Most recently he was awarded the Excellence in Science Award by the Midland Section of the American Chemical Society during their annual Fall Scientific Meeting.

Del Rio belonged to many scientific organizations of France, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico, and Spain, and was an active member of the American Philosophical Society and president of the Geological Society of Philadelphia. From 1830 to 1834 he attended the meetings of the American Philosophical Society, took part in the discussions, donated books which are still in possession of the Society s library, and presented papers for publication. 

Jefferson came to consult him in regard to the founding of the University of Virginia. Occasionally he left Northumberland to attend the meetings of the American Philosophical Society at Philadelphia before which he read several scientific papers, or to take tea with George Washington, who had invited him to come at any time without ceremony.

In conclusion, I feel it important to state that, even though Rabo et al. s paper was not the one in the Liverpool Discussion of the Faraday Society that had attracted me most to the Meeting, it profoundly (but much later) influenced a good proportion of my subsequent scientific career. 

This volume includes the papers presented at the first Japanese-Korean DV-Xa Joint Symposium (DV-Xa 98). The 11 th annual meeting of the Society for Discrete Variational Xa (Japan) was held at the Hoam Convention Center of Seoul University, Seoul, Korea, August 2-4, 1998. The symposium was organized by the Society for Discrete Variational Xa, Seoul National University, and Kunsan National Unversity. More than 80 scientists participated and discussed topics. The scientific program contained more than 50 papers, including three keynote lectures and five invited lectures, on the topics of theoretical research, especially research on materials science and X-ray and electron spectroscopies. 

In addition to Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Thompson was a member of the Society of the Sigma Xi, the national scientific honorary society, and of Gamma Alpha, the graduate science fraternity. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ohio Academy of Science, and the New York Academy of Sciences. Haber op. cit. (11), p.3. Papers on boiler plants appeared from time to time in the publications of the Society of Chemical Industry. For example, a Mr. B. A. Oldham read a paper on Carbon dioxide recorders and their application in boiler efficiency control at a meeting in Manchester (Society of Chemical Industry. Review, III (1920), 144). Llewellyn Jones and Frederic I. Scard, in the second edition of their book The Manufacture of Sugar Cane (London Duckworth Co., 1921, first edition 1909), included a chapter on the Scientific control of the factory which was largely concerned with techniques for minimizing the energy used in the refining process, and paid close attention to the efficiency of the boilers.
