Smoking benefits

In general, for smokers with cardiac disease, the benefits of nicotine replacement therapy outweigh the potential risks. In a safety and efficacy study that included veterans with cardiac disease, smoking concurrently with the nicotine patch was not associated with an increase in adverse events (Joseph et al. 1996). Although bupropion SR is generally well tolerated by smokers, it has not been adequately studied in persons with cardiac disease, and definitive conclusions regarding its safety in this patient population cannot currently be made (Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco 2003). 

Some of the participants reported health benefits such as relief from sinus congestion, reduction in the desire to smoke and drink alcohol as well as lowered blood pressure. Of the 112 participants, a total of 580 kilograms or 1,276.8 pounds were lost during the seven-day period, an average of 1.6 pounds per person daily. The personal security of our citizens also benefits directly from science and technology. Our police forces are equipped with light, strong bulletproof vests made of modem synthetic materials, and fire rescue personnel wear protective clothing made from temperature-resistant polymers. The smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in our homes are based on chemical processes that detect dangerous substances. Personal security is enhanced in the broadest sense by water purification and by the chemical testing procedures that assure us of clean water and food. 

The calculation of the fire s outcome in the third step includes the distribution of heat, smoke, and toxic gases throughout the building of concern. It allows the introduction of people into that building and monitors their movement in response to the fire. They may escape safely or fail to escape due to heat or the inhalation of toxic smoke. The benefits of changing some component of the defined fire problem is observed in the change in the number of deaths predicted, rather than by direct comparison of the toxic potencies of the different smokes. This mirrors the complexity of real-life fires. 

Antimony trioxide and 8-stannic acid only exhibit marginal benefits in terms of smoke and CO suppression in this polymer system.

The litter on the insulated floor was dryer in both experiments, the difference being 15% in spring and 10% in summer. The smaller difference in summer may be due to a lower ground water level, but a dry matter content of 70% is very acceptable. If this litter is to be burnt for heat production, the higher dry matter content is of benefit as regards efficiency and smoke production.

Of course individual people can, for causes under their personal control, also benefit from the results of epidemiology studies even though epidemiology results apply to populations, individuals at least have an increased chance of benefiting by avoiding the substances or factors identified as causes of disease, especially when, as in the case of smoking, the population risk from the causative agent is unusually...
