It is the ultimate responsibility of the engineer and the contractor to provide safe procedures for the operation and maintenance of the slurry piping system. The code provides some appropriate guidelines. The code requires an established plan for operation and a maintenance procedure. The plan must be written with instructions to operate and main tain the pipeline. It mnst inclnde provisions for control of external as well as internal cor rosion and erosion of new and existing pipes. It must describe emergency procedures to foUow in case of system failures, accidents, and other hazards. Employees need to be trained in these emergency procedures. Because pipelines eventually cross rural or urban areas and could have an impact on the environment, the local authorities should be con suited when establishing snch a plan.

Regardless of the needs dictated by these factors, the piping system itself will fall into a few general variations as shown in Fig. 4. Dead-head style piping systems are unusual and can only be used with a very well-suspended slurry. This type of system can minimize the loss of volatile components, such as ammonia from a slurry like Rodel Klebosol, since there is no circulation through a daytank or any other head space that would permit ammonia evaporation. It can also be attractive to minimize slurry turnovers to a shear- or gelling-sensitive slurry. Cabot SS-25 is well-suspended, but if... 

Historically, bulk delivery systems have used manual diaphragm valves located at the return end of the global piping system, another carryover from high-purity chemical systems. Redundant piping system. Redundant piping systems can be installed, especially in conjunction with dual daytanks, to enable a complete cleanout of the delivery system between slurry batches. When this degree of redundancy is chosen, a totally separate slurry dispense machine is included to permit a backup for all major components. 

All starch systems have to be designed to prevent settling of starch granules, which have a density of about 1.5 g/cm3. Piping has to be sized to maintain a velocity of at least 45cm/s and must be equipped for self-draining, particularly in vertical sections.91 In case of a power loss exceeding 30 minutes all slurry pipes should be flushed and drained. An air lance will be required for resuspension of settled starch.
