All starch systems have to be designed to prevent settling of starch granules, which have a density of about 1.5 g/cm3. Piping has to be sized to maintain a velocity of at least 45cm/s and must be equipped for self-draining, particularly in vertical sections.91 In case of a power loss exceeding 30 minutes all slurry pipes should be flushed and drained. An air lance will be required for resuspension of settled starch. [Pg.673]

Pay attention to slurry piping and piping conveying catalyst or other abrasive materials. [Pg.228]

Materials that are currently being transported over long distances by pipelines include coal, iron ore, limestone and copper concentrates. For hydraulic transportation over long distances to be economic, it is necessary that solids are reduced to an optimum size. To keep solids in suspension, a certain minimum velocity must be maintained. This velocity increases with the size of the particle. The increased velocity has a bearing on the wear life of the rubber lining. Wear in a slurry pipe line system increases with the cube of the velocity as well as increasing directly with the particle size. [Pg.36]

PL is the pressure drop in the slurry piping due to friction and acceleration, lb/sq ft. [Pg.310]

The primary objective in designing a slurry system is to select a practical velocity/diameter combination which carries the solids and results in reasonable pressure losses. A practical design velocity depends not only upon the physical properties of the solid and liquid, but also on the solids concentration in the stream. A velocity in the range of 4 to 7 feet per second is usually practical and economical however velocities above 7 feet per second may be necessary for strongly heterogeneous slurries. Pipe abrasion is a consideration at about 8 to 10 feet per second, and can be serious at higher velocities. [Pg.285]

It is the ultimate responsibility of the engineer and the contractor to provide safe procedures for the operation and maintenance of the slurry piping system. The code provides some appropriate guidelines. The code requires an established plan for operation and a maintenance procedure. The plan must be written with instructions to operate and main tain the pipeline. It mnst inclnde provisions for control of external as well as internal cor rosion and erosion of new and existing pipes. It must describe emergency procedures to foUow in case of system failures, accidents, and other hazards. Employees need to be trained in these emergency procedures. Because pipelines eventually cross rural or urban areas and could have an impact on the environment, the local authorities should be con suited when establishing snch a plan. [Pg.560]

The main fractionation tower is usually made of carbon steel, with the lower part fined with a ferritic or martensitic stainless steel containing 12% Cr such as Type 405 (S40500) or 410 (S41000). Slurry piping between the bottom of the main fractionation tower and the reactor may receive an additional corrosion allowance as protection against excessive erosion. [Pg.37]

In any solids removal system, there is a need for equipment to handle the bulk solids or sludge removed from the water and a procedure for removal of these solids. For many common water injection systems, the amount of bulk solids to be removed can be rather large. If the solids are free of oil, they may be disposed of in slurry piped to pits onshore or overboard offshore. If coated with oil, they may require treating prior to disposal. Treating oil from solids is beyond the scope of this chapter. Oil is normally separated from produced solids by abrasion in hydrocyclones or by washing with detergents or solvents. [Pg.214]
