For several decades since the 1960s, the municipal solid waste (MSW) in the United States has increased at a faster rate than the total population before leveling off in the last decade [36]. The per capita generation of waste reached a maximum of 4.7 Ib/day/person in 2007. The trend has finally reversed in the past few years with a reported 4.3 Ib/day/person of MSW in 2009 [37]. MSW includes material from commercial, industrial, and institutional sources as well as residences. Construction and d olition wastes are not included neither is sludge from sewage treatment. 

As the most significant point sources of phosphorus are those from sewage treatment works (STW), control of phosphorus loading is most readily achieved either by precipitation of phosphorus with iron salts (iron(lll) sulfate or iron(lll) chloride) or by biological removal. The latter can only effectively be achieved in STWs using activated sludge and there have been many descriptions of this technique. ... 

In a recent Swedish survey on effluents from sewage treatment plants, small amounts of dioctyltin substances were occasionally found in the sewage sludge, but no dioctyltin substances were detected in the water phase (Walterson et al, 1993). 

Concentrations of butyltin compounds in sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants have also been measured in the environment. Values reported are up to 0.77 and 2.22 mg/kg dry weight, respectively, for mono-and dibutyltins (Summer et al., 2003).
