The ohgomeric distribution of NPEO depends on the enviromnental compartment. In this respect, the dissolved phase of waters (seawater and wastewaters) contain higher ethoxamers, whereas river and marine sediments oidy contain nonylphenol and the lower oligomer derivatives (Fignre 4). Nonylphenol and its low-ethoxylated components have been identified in mechanical-biological sewage treated and in some biodegradation experiments", so that its preferential occurrence in the sediment may be due to these effects and/or to their preferent association to the particnlate material. [Pg.20]

The index was originally developed for plants where flammable or reactive materials are stored, handled or processed. Flotation or froth flotation is a physicochemical property-based separation process. It is widely utilised in the area of mineral processing also known as ore dressing and mineral beneftciation for mineral concentration. In addition to the mining and metallurgical industries, flotation also finds appHcations in sewage treatment, water purification, bitumen recovery from tar sands, and coal desulfurization. Nearly one biUion tons of ore are treated by this process aimuaHy in the world. Phosphate rock, precious metals, lead, zinc, copper, molybdenum, and tin-containing ores as well as coal are treated routinely by this process some flotation plants treat 200,000 tons of ore per day (see Mineral recovery and processing). Various aspects of flotation theory and practice have been treated in books and reviews (1 9). [Pg.40]

The principal interest in photosynthetic bacteria for thek appHcabiUty to SCP production (Table 1) has been in Japan, where Jiodobacter capsulatus has been used to treat industrial wastes in sewage ponds (40,41). Pipes, valves, fittings, and almost all other components of small equipment are now available in plastic or ceramics, which do not corrode in salt water and are less expensive than the metals now used. Synthetic detergents are now available for use with seawater, although a final rinse with freshwater may be desired. Saltwater sewage can be treated successfully. Dual water systems using freshwater and seawater are already in use on ships and in many island resort hotels. Many of these also have seawater systems for fire fighting. Trickling Filters. The so-called trickling filter is not a filter but a bed of stones or other coarse material (packing) over which the sewage flows. In terms of the total number of installations, it is the most widely used biological treatment process. A notable example of controlled water reuse was utilization of secondary sewage effluent from the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore by the Sparrows Point Works of Bethlehem Steel (6). The Sparrows Point plant was suppHed primarily by weUs located near the brackish waters of Baltimore harbor. Increased draft on the weUs had led to saltwater intmsion. Water with chloride concentration as high as 10 mg/L is unsuitable for many steelmaking operations. Rollers, for example, are pitted by such waters. However, treated effluent from the Back River Plant can be used for some operations, such as coke quenching, and >4 x 10 m /d (10 gal/d) are piped 13 km to Sparrows Point. This arrangement has proved economical to both parties for >40 yr. [Pg.291]

Effluents from both dye works and dyehouses are treated both before leaving the plant, eg, neutrali2ation of acidic and alkaline Hquors and heavy metal removal, and in municipal sewage works. Various treatments are used (34). [Pg.301]
