Sloughs

Other than the biofilter and culture chambers, recirculating systems typically also employ one or more settling chambers or mechanical filters to remove soHds such as unconsumed feed, feces, and mats of bacteria that slough from the bio filter into the water. Each recirculating system requires a mechanical means of moving water from component to component. That usually means mechanical pumping, though air-lifts can also be used.

Classification efficiency of the hvdroseparator compares with that of the cone classifier and is appreciably lower than that obtained from mechanical or hvdraiilic units. The chief virtue of the hvdroseparator is its ability to receive and slough off great quantities of vv ater at low per-imit-voliirne cost. 

Residuals Produced The residuals produced in a fixed-film reactor are normally small when compared to the residuals produced in a suspended growth system. There can be some sloughing of biomass during system ojjerations, and this may need to be separated from the effluent. The residuals, depending on site-specific requirements, may require additional treatment prior to ultimate disposal. 

Shock load The arrival at a plant of a waste which is toxic to organisms in sufficient quantity or strength to cause operating problems. Possible problems include odors and sloughing off of the growth or slime on a trickling-filter media. Organic or hydraulic overloads also can cause a shock load.

KCl-polymer (potassium chloride-polymer) muds can be classified as low solids-polymer muds or as inhibitive muds, due to their application to drilling in water-sensitive, sloughing shales. The use of polymers and the concentration of potassium chloride provide inhibition of shales and clays for maximum hole stability. The inverted flow properties (high yield point, low plastic viscosity) achieved with polymers and prehydrated bentonite provide good hole cleaning with minimum hole erosion. 

Undesirable solids are drilled cuttings and those solids sloughed into the borehole. They usually occur in all size ranges from colloidal to coarse. The specific gravity of commonly encountered drilled solids ranges from 2.35 (shale), through 2.65 (sand), 2.69 (limestone), to 2.85 (dolomite) see Table 4-57 [29]. 

After the hole has been unloaded, keep mist and foam injection pumps in operation to clean the hole of sloughing formations, providing a mist of 1.5 barrels of water per hour per inch of hole diameter and 0.5 to 4 gal of surfactant per hour, respectively. 

At this point, begin air or mist drilling. Drill 20 to 100 ft to allow any sloughing hole to be cleaned up. 

Once the hole has been stabilized (i.e., after sloughing), stop drilling and blow the hole with air mist to eliminate cuttings. Continue this procedure for 15 to 20 min or until the air mist is clean (i.e., shows a fine spray and white color). 

Intermediate casing strings are cemented to seal off abnormal pressure formations and cover both incompetent formations, which could cave or slough, and lost circulation formations.

Corrosion and mineral debris can form in condensate lines from a variety of means, and it is not uncommon for the resultant debris accumulated over many years to slough off and return to the boiler when operating conditions change. The result is often a thick boiler-bottom sludge that settles out in the water space or baked-on sludge, which mars efficient combustion and water tube heat transfer.
