Slats

Polonium is readily dissolved in dilute acids, but is only slightly soluble in alkali. Polonium slats of organic acids char rapidly halide amines are reduced to the metal. 

Ceric slats are orange red or yellowish cerous salts are usually white. 

Takamizawa et al. developed a general ring-expansion reaction of heterocycles that, applied to thiazolium salts, yields 1,4-thiazines (496, 497) thiamine (220) reacts with dialkyl acylphosphonates (221) to give the tricyclic 1,4-thiazine (222) (498), which is easily hydrolyzed to dihydro-1,4-thiazinone (223) (499) (Scheme 106). In the case of thiazolium slats containing no functional groups (224), 1,4-thiazine derivatives (226) were directly obtained in fairly good yields (Scheme 107). 

Screw presses have been used extensively in North America, but are not popular in Europe. The mash is added at the top of a vertical rotating screw. As the mash moves down it is compressed in the taper and juice flows out through slatted conical walls. Compression of the pomace blocks channels for juice flow and iuhibits juice extraction. Extensive use of press aids is necessary for efficient operation. 

Conveyors may be of parallel-chain, mat, slat, woven wire-mesh belt, or cast-alloy type. Automatic tensioning devices are used to maintain belt tension during heating and cooung. The product may rest directly on the conveyor or on special supports built into it. RoUer-conveyors are used for large pieces. Flame curtains are provided for sealing the ends and for protection of special treating atmospheres. 

Wire-bound wood boxes (typical loads, 1 to 2 tons) have limited use for chemical produc ts. The box body, consisting of thin wooden slats held in place by steel wire twisted around each at, is fastened to a solid-deck wood pallet. The top also consists of wire-bound wooden pieces. A PE liner protects the product and prevents it from falling through the slats. Disadvantages of the container are the labor needed for setup and the space required for knocked-down boxes. Since manufacturers are usually near sources of hardwood, shipping costs to users may be high lead times of 3 to 4 weeks are common. 

Chain Conveyors These devices for handling containers are available in either roller-chain designs or less costly types. There is a variety of slat conveyors that use both single and double strands of roller chain, as well as a slider type using cheaper chain. In general, slat chain conveyors are used only on loads which are too heavy for economical handling by belt, roller, or wheel units or which have odd shapes not suitable for roller or wheel units. They are particularly adaptable to pallet handhng, as are simple open strands of chain with flat-surfaced attachments. 

In the fixed-film reactor, the organisms grow on an inert surface that is maintained in the reactor. Plastic packing of very low pressure drop (just greater than wood slats), transfer Coefficients about same as 2-inch Raschig rings. Most useful applications in gas cooling systems or biological trickling filters. 

Windbreaker - A windbreaker is necessary to prevent the wind from extinguishing the flames. It serves also to hide the flames. Since a solid wall produces undesirable eddies, a louvered type is used. The windbreaker is octagonal and is placed 2.4 m from the stack. The height should be at least 0.6 m more than the stack clearance. The slats should be at least 225 mm wide and overlap by at least 50 mm. They should slope 45° to direct the flow of air downward on the inside of the enclosure. Four access doors are provided in the windbreaker, equally spaced around the periphery.

The system is used in humidification and dehumidification. However, grid and slat packings are more commonly used tj pes.

Medium-density mat with flexible facings of paper or scrim stitched through. Quilts are used for acoustic absorption behind perforated or slatted panels and ceilings. 

Paper- or foil-backed mineral wool product fabricated from low-density slabs in which the slats stand upright with the fibers predominantly perpendicular to the major faces. This type of product is used on circular and elliptical ducting, pipes and vessels to give a compression-resistant insulant. Supplied in roll form. 

Fixed ventilation has to be weatherproof to some degree. If it were not, then a simple hole in the wall or roof would be sufficient. The normal form of fixed ventilator is the louver panel. At its simplest, this may be a number of slats of wood mounted at 45-60° in a door or wall opening, and at its most sophisticated an aerodynamically designed two- or three-bank chevron of roll-formed or extruded aluminum (Figure 28.6).
