Sites strategies

WaterSmart Environmental, Inc. (WaterSmart), has developed the Express process technology for simultaneous treatment of contaminated soil and groundwater. Express, a combination of soil washing/leaching and in situ biological treatment, is an acronym for EXPedited REmediation Site Strategy. 

The objective was to develop a site assessment model based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process that can be used both for site selection and site ranking/controlling purposes. While the different application situations to some extent require different criteria the intention was to develop a model as uniform as possible to achieve consistency in site strategy processes. 

Whenever possible, the results of the qualitative ranking of the current site portfolio (cf. Chap. 4) were used to identify existing sites located in or close to the countries favored by management to generate investment alternatives that are in line with the overall site strategy. 

Early work in this area was carried out in 2001 by the UKAEA, and the Hazard Reduction Index illustrated the extent of hazard reduction to be achieved by UKAEA through their site strategies and plans. This work was shared with BNFL and other UK nuclear organisations in 2001, and since then BNFL and UKAEA have further developed the concept and published a proposed Waste Conversion Index (WCI) in September 2003. ...

While prevention of substitution or cyclisation reaction at an electrophilically more reactive site is one of the techniques to promote reaction at the less reactive site, strategies to specifically direct substitution at the less reactive position are also known. Phenol, for example, is specifically formylated at ortho position in alkaline medium Cinnamic acid is specifically nitrated at ortho position by N Oj. It is possible that in such reactions, the first step is the complexation of the reagent with the substituent already present, which then favours the attack of the reagent at the sterically close (to the complexing group) aromatic position which is ortho to the substituent already present.

By similar logic, protein affinity Hbraries have been constmcted to identify protein—protein combining sites, as in antibody—antigen interaction (19) and recombinant Hbraries have been made which produce a repertoire of antibodies in E. coli (20). In another case, a potential DNA-based therapeutic strategy has been studied (21). DNAs from a partially randomized Hbrary were selected to bind thrombin in vitro. Oligonucleotides, termed aptamers that bound thrombin shared a conserved sequence 14—17 nucleotides long.
