INDEX conversion

Early work in this area was carried out in 2001 by the UKAEA, and the Hazard Reduction Index illustrated the extent of hazard reduction to be achieved by UKAEA through their site strategies and plans. This work was shared with BNFL and other UK nuclear organisations in 2001, and since then BNFL and UKAEA have further developed the concept and published a proposed Waste Conversion Index (WCI) in September 2003. ...

Data for the polymerization of styrene, PS-DEPN (the polystyrene adduct) in the presence and absence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) are shown in Figure 3.8(a) and Figure 3.8(b). The conversion index is first order with respect to t for systems containing BPO, in accord with Equation 3.35, but in the absence of BPO, a power-dependence, Equation 3.36, of is observed. 

The basic kinetic features of ATRP are similar to NMP, and this can be demonstrated for the copper-mediated polymerization of styrene. The ATRP of styrene in t-butyl benzene, catalyzed by Cu(I)Br/L, where L is the ligand diheptyl bipyridine, and a (PS-Br) adduct in the presence or absence of a radical initiator 2,2 -azobis (2,4,4-tri methyl pentane) VRllO at 110°C, has been studied. The data are shown in Figure 3.9(a) and Figure 3.9(b). Again, it is seen that for the system containing VRl 10, steady-state kinetics apply, and the conversion index is first order in t [Figure 3.9(a)], but in the absence of the initiator power law kinetics are obeyed [Figure 3.9(b)]. 

With the highest ratio between dry biomass produced and the COD/BODs consumed (conversion index (%)), A. nidulans was identified as the best converter (Table 4). However, the aim of the process was not only to produce biomass, but also to consume or degrade vinasse. Thus, a good converter may not be the best producer or degrader. As an example, withy4. niger and A. sulphureus, the first showed more productivity and reduction of vinasse than the second, which had better conversion indexes (Table 4).
