Site description

The Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (SERS), Wang Nam Kiao district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand (14°30 N, 101°55 E), was established in 1967. At the time of establishment, most of the area had already been disturbed by human activities (Kaeoniam et al. 1976). [Pg.319]

The area is 7,808 hectares and the altitude ranges from 250 to 762 m. The soil is categorized as an Orthic Acrisol according to the FAO/UNESCO scheme (FAO/UNESCO 1979). The vegetation includes dry evergreen forest (DEF), dry deciduous forest (DDF) and plantation plots as the major vegetative types (Fig. 1). The climate is classified as Aw (Koppen 1931). The annual precipitation is 1,260 mm and the average temperature is 26°C. [Pg.319]

The DEF was primarily dominated by Hopea ferrea and Shorea spp. that formed the upper story 20-40 m above ground. A typical DEF fosters more than 1,000 trees (trunk diameter at breast height, DBH 5 cm) ha-1, and the total basal area at 1.3 m height exceeded 30 m2 ha-1 and the above ground biomass was over 200 tons ha-1 (Kanzaki et al. 1995). [Pg.319]

The vegetative types were distributed in a mosaic pattern in the northeastern part of the site. Bare ground (BG) without vegetation due to human activities, also scattered in the mosaic. [Pg.320]


Each worksite is different even though relative hazards may be similar. Wind direction, surface contamination, or neighboring properties that may contain contributing contamination may vary. The site description/background sections should give the workers enough information to perform their job safely without overkill. The simpler, smaller, and fewer hazards there are on site, the less background information will be necessary. [Pg.59]

Sources of tliis information include site descriptions mid data from the preliminary assessment (PA), site inspection (SI), and remedial investigation (RI) reports. Other sources include local soil sur eys, wetland maps, aerial photographs, and reports by the National Oceanograpliic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and tlie U.S. Geological Sur ey (USGS). The location of the probe necessitates careful design and documentation to ensure that surrounding environmental conditions do not interfere with the subsequent interpretations of the measurement data.
