Silicon transformation

It is supposed to reach chemical equilibrium when liquid and gaseous silicon transforms to each other above melting point of silicon (1414 °C). The saturated gas pressure can be expressed by Clapeyron equation ... [Pg.443]

When single-crystal substrates with a small lattice mismatch are used, sol-gel produces epitaxial films for a few ferroelectric systems. Although epitaxial growth of crystalline films from an amorphous layer has been observed in the amorphous silicon to silicon transformation, sol-gel epitaxy only began to emerge as a possible fabrication technique in the last few years. Hirano and Kato were the first to observe the epitaxial growth of LiNbOs on the sapphire (110) face [37]. Xu et al. [34,43] found the epitaxial growth of LiNbOs on the LiTaOs (110) face and the LiNbOa (006) face. Epitaxial KNbOs was reported... [Pg.488]

At 1684 K, silicon transforms from a covalent semiconductor solid to a quite peculiar liquid metal. It is well known both from experiments and simulations that its coordination is much lower ( 6-7) than that of typical liquids ( 12), which is a clear indication of the persistence of directional bonding in the liquid phase. Very httle is known about its surface, and the measurements are extremely difficult due to the high reactivity and melting temper-... [Pg.139]

Selenium is added up to 0.1% to silicon steels (2—4% Si) used in transformer cores to enhance the development of the secondary recrystallization texture which, in turn, improves the magnetic characteristics. Selenium alloying additions to the melt may be made as elemental Se, nickel—selenium, or ferroselenium. The recovery depends on the melting practice and method of addition. Normally, it is in the range of 66%, but may be as high as 90%. [Pg.336]

Neutrons also transform some of the silicon atoms to phosphoms through the following reaction ... [Pg.532]

In total, three high-silicon iron anodes of 3 kg each were installed at points a, aj and as shown in Fig. 11-3. The anodes were bedded vertically in fine-grained coke in boreholes about 2.3 m deep and J = 0.2 m so that the length of the coke backfill was about 1 m. Each anode was connected by a separate cable to the anode bus bar of the transformer-rectifier to allow the current of individual anodes to be monitored. Three cathode cables 2x4 mm were installed for the return path of the protection current and attached on the tank end to the connecting clamps of the dome support. [Pg.299]

As an example, a tank farm that is to be cathodically protected by this method is shown schematically in Fig. 11-4. As can be seen in the figure, injection of the protection current occurs with two current circuits of a total of about 9 A, via 16 vertically installed high-silicon iron anodes embedded in coke. These are distributed over several locations in the tank farm to achieve an approximately uniform potential drop. The details of the transformer-rectifier as well as the individual anode currents are included in Fig. 11-4. Anodes 4, 5 and 6 have been placed at areas where corrosion damage previously occurred. Since off potentials for 7/ -free potential measurements cannot be used, external measuring probes should be installed for accurate assessment (see Section 3.3.3.2 and Chapter 12). [Pg.300]

Silicone laminates are used principally in electrical applications such as slot wedges in electric motors, particularly class H motors, terminal boards, printed curcuit boards and transformer formers. There is also some application in aircraft, including use in firewalls and ducts. [Pg.831]

It may occasion surprise that an amorphous material has well-defined energy bands when it has no lattice planes, but as Street s book points out, the silicon atoms have the same tetrahedral local order as crystalline silicon, with a bond angle variation of (only) about 10% and a much smaller bond length disorder . Recent research indicates that if enough hydrogen is incorporated in a-silicon, it transforms from amorphous to microcrystalline, and that the best properties are achieved just as the material teeters on the edge of this transition. It quite often happens in MSE that materials are at their best when they are close to a state of instability. [Pg.270]

The measures of solid state reactivity to be described include experiments on solid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-solid chemical reaction, solid-solid structural transitions, and hot pressing-sintering in the solid state. These conditions are achieved in catalytic activity measurements of rutile and zinc oxide, in studies of the dissolution of silicon nitride and rutile, the reaction of lead oxide and zirconia to form lead zirconate, the monoclinic to tetragonal transformation in zirconia, the theta-to-alpha transformation in alumina, and the hot pressing of aluminum nitride and aluminum oxide. [Pg.161]

The high temperature tx-fi transformation of shock-activated silicon nitride powder has been investigated at temperatures of 1600 and 1700°C [84B01]. [Pg.172]

Epoxides are regio- and stereoselectively transformed into fluorohydrins by silicon tetrafluoride m the presence of a Lewis base, such as diisopropyleth-ylamme and, m certain instances, water or tetrabutylammonium fluoride The reactions proceed under very mild conditions (0 to 20 C in 1,2-diohloroethane or diethyl ether) and are highly chemoselective alkenes, ethers, long-chain internal oxiranes, and carbon-silicon bonds remain intact The stereochemical outcome of the epoxide ring opening with silicon tetrafluoride depends on an additive used, without addition of water or a quaternary ammonium fluoride, as fluorohydrins are formed, whereas m the presence of these additives, only anti opening leading to trans isomers is observed [17, 18] (Table 2)... [Pg.204]

The presence of a tnalkylsUyl group in a fluonnated organic compound may be useful to direct further transformations of that matenal Yet m some instances it IS the fluonnated substituent that controls the reactions of the tnalkylsdyl group Contrary to predictions, treatment of tert-hnlyX 3-tnfluoromethyl-6-tnmethylsilyl-phenyl carbamate with rert-butyllithium results m metallation of one of the methyl groups attached to silicon rather than that of the aromatic nng [90] (equation 75)... [Pg.599]

Intereshngly it is also possible to form a stable silicon-fluonne bond by treatment of a methoxysilole with boron-tnfluonde etherate or of a silole with tntyl tetrafluoroborate [106] The resultant fluorosilane is also a buildmg block for further transformations of the silole (equation 84)... [Pg.601]
